I think it is just a matter of not letting the MAF read 5.0V and then Shane can tune around it however.
One of the guys on EvoM suggested you can just rescale it to resolve that. Regardless of the scale, the pipe will only flow what it will flow. Why would I argue with AMS if they say that is the limit of their intake?

I just spoke with Robert at FP and he said that the FPred and FPblack will work fine with 3" intakes and no special intake is required, so who knows, but I trust him...however i trust AMS too...

People use 4" intakes on 16g's (2.xx"") on DSM's, why not an Evo? ;)

I was just curious about the physics behind it. I'm one of those IT guys that isn't good at math.
The heresay is that you can't scale the X's maf on a 4" housing, which is why most vendors neck them down. I'm taking that to mean that 3.5" may be fine and that's what we're looking at.

hhmmm. How big around is the MAF?

The current one is in a 3" pipe. They just weld a flange on the pipe and the MAF is inserted a couple inches before the conical filter.

Most aftermarket pipes keep that 3" diameter to avoid the hassle of MAF rescaling. I'm not sure how big of a pita such rescaling is for Shane but he didn't seem concerned.

Will it physically fit? Yes. Could it still max out the maf sensor? Yes.

The physics are what I do best :D The maf sensor is calibrated to be installed in a 2.5" tube (or whatever size the interior diameter of the stock maf housing is), and the cross-sectional area of that tube. The bigger the tube, the more cross-sectional area, so it has to be re-calibrated to match said tube.
As far as running a 4" intake to a 2.5" inlet, it's been done for years with no ill effects. Your lowest pressure point will be in the intake, generating vacuum from the outside air (thus the sucking sound) and then as long as there is a smooth transition from the 4" intake to the 2.5" (?) intake on the turbo, the compressor wheel will do everythign in its power to just suck in and swirl the air as much as it can. As the air approaches the blades though, it will probably be straight.
I had a FP 4" intake on a bastard20g turbo w/ a 2.5" inlet on it, they made a crazy coupler just for DSMs. It was like $35 but it fit perfect and was a pretty smooth transition.

oh, ok, so it is like a Subaru MAF then, where it is just stuck in the side of the pipe. I was thinking it was like a DSM or Evo 8/9 MAS where it is actually part of the intake pipe.
