The first 20 miles of driving need to be burnout miles. No joke, it's the only way to break in engines properly.

Heh, no WOT b/c of the MAF issues but I certainly gave it a bit of boost and rpm :)

scheides, did you replace your main bearings or main studs or are they stock? I'm not sure if that has to be done when you unbolt the mains.

That's been argued many times, the whole "proper way to break in an engine" thing. I know some super knowledgable people that will say one way and one will say the other, I don't think there's currently a 100% proven method as compared to the other.

Bearings are ACL Race, not sure if the main studs were replaced or not, I'd have to ask MAP. Rod bolts are L19's though :)

For the first 500 miles we suggest driving at varying engine speeds. Do not get on the highway and set the cruise control for an hour straight. The key to seating the rings is a variety of partial throttle and short bursts of acceleration. After accelerating let off the throttle while still in gear, letting the engine slow the car down. Don’t baby the car but don’t beat the hell out of the car either. A good variety of driving conditions is the best for engine break-in.

Thx for the link! I've read just about every one of the big dsm/evo shops break-in instructions (including these) and I think AMS is spot-on here and its about what I've done. Partial throttle pulls are fine since the existing tune is mostly fine, and its rare that I cruise on the freeway for more than a few miles anyways.

Got about 60 miles on it now, no leaks yet and it drives/idles great! I can't wait to start tuning this thing :D These cams are awesome, the car will idle just fine at 900rpm and roll down my alley in first gear at 1000rpm no problem.

I like the hard break in method. It's been out standing in its field since then. No problems or oil burning or anything.
