Probably stock stuff for now unless I can get a good deal on some Evo springs and retainers.

Brown- I don't want to fuck it up. I don't think John will charge much anyways. He only quoted me $60 for a re-surface and hot tank. I will be asking him before I drop it off and see how much he says.

As far as tapping and plugging the egr, I would have been spending more money buying the tools to do it myself than I would having him do it.

Just use a 1/2" bit and still by hand.

You actually want to use a reamer. You can use it in a hand drill and will follow the current holes very closely.

Well I've done it by hand twice before with no issues, but obviously it's up to you.

It really isn't that expensive to have it done. I mean, since it's there one might as well have it done with precision.

That casting flash really isn't a big deal because there's nothing knocking it around up there. I do end up cleaning up the oil and coolant ports on blocks just for good measure, but not regular flash inside the head or block. Never hurts though.

So, I will be putting together most of the shortblock on Friday with Kerry. Quick question, what do some of the experienced builders on here suggest for piston ring end gap?

Stock spec is as follows:

No. 1 0.25-0.40 mm (.0098-.0157 in.)
No.2 0.20-0.35 mm (.0079-.0138 in.)
Oil 0.20-0.70 mm (.0079-.0276 in.)

Limit:
No. 1, No.2 0.8 mm (.031 in.)
Oil 1.0 mm (.039 in.)

Now, I plan on running lots of boost from the 16g and possibly nitrous down the road. I know that more heat/boost/timing/etc = wider gap. My question is how wide?

I have read from a few builds on here that .018 and .021 work well for a higher boost motor.

Thoughts? Steve? John? Swanny? Shane?

Anyone? I'll be assembling this thing tomorrow.

On my 2.3 rebuild I gapped my top ring 21 thousands or so, and while compression was decent (170-175 across), I got more blowby then I was happy with for a DD. If I were to do it again I'd go in the 16-18 range unless you are shooting for more than 500whp. But I'm not a motor builder, so take it with a grain of salt.

Yea, I won't be seeing 500 whp any time soon, just a 16g.

Also, what compression pistons were you using? Mine will only be stock 7.8:1

9:1 Ross pistons. My stock 2g motor was 180-185 with the same tester. I think I could have had the same numbers if I had gapped them tighter, plus I didn't have a ring filer, just by hand so it was a sub-par job to say the least.
