Test drove my first Evo today
Alright I test drove my very first Evo today. Holy crap I felt like a total noob driving it, let me explain...
I've been driving my '91 Eagle Talon TSI for like 5 years or so. I'm used to the way the clutch feels and how it engages (ACT26000, kind of a hard pedal feel, engages almost right away when you let it go a bit). I've never really driven any other manual car.
When I drove this Evo, I had a hard time feeling the clutch. Clutch felt really soft compared to the one on my DSM and you really had to let go of the pedal before it engages, or at least in my opinion it does. Man that was embarrassing, luckily I didn't stall it. The owner must have been like, are you sure you know how to drive a stick?, lol.
Man now I'm scared to go look at other cars now. I feel like I have to re-learn how to drive a manual car because I'm only used to driving mine.

Every car is different, especially with aftermarket clutches. Takes a few starts to figure out the engagement point and you can't be asleep at the wheel.

Re: Test drove my first Evo today
So this is normal then? because if it's not I felt like a total noob. Sounded like I was trying to rev his engine and I wasn't. I couldn't find out when the clutch engages. I felt stupid, that's all.

Re: Test drove my first Evo today
Once you get used to it a light clutch pedal is very nice since you can be so precise in your action with it. Go from an Evo with a stock clutch into a DSM with a 2600 and you'll realize how silly such a heavy pedal is.

How does an evo petal feel with a 2600/2900 or equivalent? I was amazed when I drove a 2g with the same clutch as my 1g (2900 6 puck) and it took roughly half the petal effort to press. Is an evo even less than a 2g?

Re: Test drove my first Evo today
I've never driven a 2G 2600 (that I can clearly remember), but the Evo HDSS (2900?) is far lighter than the 1G 2600.

You don't need to put a 2600 or 2900 in an Evo. Most guys run the lowly HD which is called a 2100 on the DSMs with a sprung 6-puck and that setup holds 700+whp, which is more than the Exedy twin disc for the Evo will handle.

It's the silver one right? I think we talked already. I will keep you in mind, but I'm kind of picky when it comes to what I want. I only checked out this one Evo so far but they are hard to find.

Re: Test drove my first Evo today
My 2G pedal was super light with the 2600, but I also hadn't removed the restrictor pill.
My Evo, which I assume has the pill removed already based on how it feels, is much heavier with what I've been told is a stock clutch.
So I dunno, I'm seeing the reverse.

How does that work? does the clutch just have that much more surface area or are the rating systems different between the DSM and Evo PP? (sorry I have limited experience with the Evo)

Re: Test drove my first Evo today
As mentioned already, every car will have a different clutch feel. You could drive five different Evos and every one of them will feel a little different. Between adjustments in engagement points, aftermarket clutches and wear and tear, every car is a little unique in its clutch feel.
Just get out there and drive a few more sticks and you'll know what we mean.
have fun,
Curt

If anything, the clutch pill removal should yield a lighter feeling clutch since you're no longer pressing against the pill/spring. Should be a negligible change though, my guess is any difference people feel is due to fresh fluid and bleeding the system.

My guess is the pull style clutch that Evo's use.
