You can rent scanners at autozone and other auto parts stores, not worth it to buy one when you can check things for free.

I bought one a while back. and have used it very many times, on friends cars, my cars etc. I feel its paid for itself on gas i would have spent going to and from the parts stores to check it each time. plus it was only like 30-40 bucks
