Gas Mileage

So i got this kia rio and it should be getting 25 mpg, 275 a tank, and im getting more like 14-19 mpg. I dont get it, Its only got 50,000 on it, anyone know what may cause this? I drive like im 90 years old so that cant be the problem

Re: Gas Mileage

If the MPG is that bad, my first though would be faulty front o2 sensor.

Heard it could be breaks too, it is a little jumpy from start and shifts funny sometimes

Do a scan and see if any codes come up. Check engine light? O2 is the first bet.

Brakes you mean? A stuck caliper would slow you down.. but youd notice the sound and a really hot wheel, as well as your brakes probably ground down to the metal on the pad..

Do a A/T fluid flush and replace the filter...along with a new front o2 sensor. Take care of all the other regular tune-up and maintenance items too.

Got the car lifted up no stuck brakes, air filters good, no check engine light, I'm baffled.

What are the AFR's at cruise (NB voltage)? Does the car feel sluggish at WOT?

I had a Kia once that the catalytic converter got clogged and mileage tanked. The only tell tale problem I could find was reduced performance at higher RPM and load.

You can rent scanners at autozone and other auto parts stores, not worth it to buy one when you can check things for free.

I bought one a while back. and have used it very many times, on friends cars, my cars etc. I feel its paid for itself on gas i would have spent going to and from the parts stores to check it each time. :) plus it was only like 30-40 bucks

NB = narrow band O2 sensor

Re: Gas Mileage

Clean your throttle body and run an intake cleaner through a vacuum source. Change your spark plugs. Air filter dirty? If your o2s are bad enough to effect fuel economy it would set a code and turn on the check engine light. Make sure your tires are at least 30 psi.

For the funky shifting do like said above, flush the trans fluid and replace filter, if you can drop the pan and replace the filter on a Kia Rio idk.

Re: Gas Mileage

LOL, you weren't actually checking your gas mileage? Go to a pump and fill it all the way up. When it gets close to full, then put the pump on the slowest setting. Reset your trip meter, then do your driving. When empty go back to the same pump and do the same thing. Take the miles on your trip meter and divide by the gallons you just put in, that is your gas mileage.
