I've never used the clay bar in straight lines, I've gone in a circular motion just like I was applying wax. It's pretty cool if the paint is bad as you'll feel the clay kind of "dragging" at first then after a couple passes it should be smooth.

Circular is fine too, different methods for different theories. Wax is a definite must after claybar.
When I go all out on a car here is my process:
-wash w/ car wash soap
-wash w/ Dawn dishsoap
-clay bar w/spray detailer as lubricant
-wash w/ car wash soap
-polish
-wax
-spray detail
