Re: McChrystal, good guy or bad guy?

My .02 as a soldier in Afghanistan:

Atleast he obviously isn't worried about what people think of him too much that it gets in the way, like a lot of people do.

The article has been quite the topic of discussion here in Afghanistan today. I found it quite entertaining when I read it last night.

I was just pissed that when I was in Bagram a couple weeks ago the Dairy Queen was closed because he axe'd all the fast food joints.

I'm no where near a combat MOS, I seldom go out on foot patrols(I have gone out as support for some equipment) and 95% of my travel is by helicopter.

It is sometimes frustrating being on the intel side of the house when things are deemed not credible enough, then a week later there's a bomb there. And I'm just a tech to fix equipment so I only know what I get told or see while I'm working. The only direct effect is at a place near the Pak boarder I spend time at that takes incomming mortar rounds daily is we cant counter fire because they shoot from near a cell phone tower we can't risk blowing up.

When the guys talked about how some of his policies are good, yet by the time they trickle down to the line units they are so fucked up they're sometimes dangerous is very true. Our brigade lost two guys because they couldn't shoot someone that was "suspicious" until it was too late and the guy blew himself up.

I'd still have someone like him in charge, who has a lot of experience with SF and unconventional warfare than some politician with stars on his chest.

Hah, I've not seen any camel spiders in this part of Afghanistan. There's just giant angry ants and the occasional 4' monitor lizard. Well and malaria but I think it's too hot in this valley for mosquitos.
