Because instead of 26 possible letters per space, you have 36 possible options because you are adding 10 numbers.
So if you do the math, it would be 36*36*36*36*36*36 for a 6 digit password. Which would actually be 2,176,782,336 possible solutions as opposed to 308,915,776 (26*26*26*26*26*26) the difference 1,867,866,560 possible solutions difference.
When ever i am securing a Server with new passwords i always use Upper Case, lower case, numbers and symbols. Which ends up being a crap load more. But most websites disregard upper and lower.
