Help with someones ID please
My girlfriends Paypal account got used somehow, last thursday. They performed 2 transactions. One for $25 and another for $200. It shows that they purchased gift certificates for Ebay. And it shows the persons email address as being:
harlyger@yahoo.com
That is all the info I have. Any one with cool computer hacker skills here able to use that email address and find out any more info? If so, please share anything you can with me. We've already contacted the Bank and they are going to start an investigation which will take 30 - 90 days. She is calling Paypal right now as well. But any more info we can find, the better!!
Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

Re: Help with someones ID please
Shitty situation. Not long ago my bank account was hacked, and I had over 1,046 dollars in transactions that where not mine, and being a jobless broke ass, living check to check, that all was in the negative. Took the bank a few weeks, and time to make a bunch of phone calls, and paperwork to fill out, but i got it resolved. Still waiting on them to catch the fucker that did it though.

I'd be surprised if that site actually gives you any usable information even after you enter your credit card number. I suppose it's worth a try though.

This usually happens when someone uses the same password for regular websites that they use for a financial site. It's relatively easy to hack a web forum, for example, and then hit a bunch of financial sites to see if the passwords match.

Re: Help with someones ID please
Yeah, use different passwords for stuff, and make sure they're secure ones. Even one number goes a long way. If you must reuse passwords (due to memory or whatever) be very careful not to get caught by phishing sites, they'll be able to completely screw you over. Still, using only one password that's fairly secure is so much better than using more than one and having to write them all down.
Remember, dsmlol isn't even half as secure as dsm101. Simple math tells you for a 6 digit password, changing 3 letters to 3 numbers means they'd have to go through 511110080 more permutations to brute force it.

How can that be? Theres 26 options or letters to the alphabet and 10 options 0-9, unless someone were to guess (lol).

Because instead of 26 possible letters per space, you have 36 possible options because you are adding 10 numbers.
So if you do the math, it would be 36*36*36*36*36*36 for a 6 digit password. Which would actually be 2,176,782,336 possible solutions as opposed to 308,915,776 (26*26*26*26*26*26) the difference 1,867,866,560 possible solutions difference.
When ever i am securing a Server with new passwords i always use Upper Case, lower case, numbers and symbols. Which ends up being a crap load more. But most websites disregard upper and lower.
not sure how spaz got his number.

Im surprized that ebay didnt just void the Gift Certs and credit you back. Unless they have already been used.

Re: Help with someones ID please
Got my number because I did it specifically for the change I made, from 26^6 to 26^3*36^3.

Re: Help with someones ID please
I'd let the bank sort it out, change your passwords and call it a day. When my paypal account got jacked, I figured out it was done from some university campus computer in Kenya. Yay, now what? And I automatically assume that if they're smart enough to break into the account in the first place, they're smart enough not to allow that email addy to come back to them. They probably set up a brand new @yahoo account for every successful theft.
It's happened to me twice, and it's extremely frustrating. But it's really best to chalk it up to a learning experience and make your identity more secure.

Actually your math is wrong. If you were to do a strict 3 alpha, 3 numeric it would be 26^3*10^3 because you are limiting the last three to only numbers. When in reality if you just a a mix of 3 numbers and 3 letters not worrying about their placement the math would be 36^6. *sorry that is wrong* it would be 26^3*36^3.
