What to do for a new turbo?
I blew out my turbo today after using it for 4 pulls total. I am wondering what turbo I should get to replace it with or if I should just rebuild it. It is a 60 trim with a 82 a/r exhaust housing on it and it is a T3 turbo. I could get just about any T3 turbo to replace it or I can rebuild it. What do you think would be a better option? My car is a 2g fwd. The mods are FMIC, 780's,255, 6 bolt with new bearings, ported head with 264's crower springs and retainers, 3" exhaust and the rest of the necessary supporting mods. I want a turbo that can get a lot of power and still be streetable. This turbo spooled around 5500 rpm at 25psi I think and I wouldn't want anything much laggier, but I also wouldn't want to go with a smaller one either. I have plenty of time to wait as I will probably just put a ported 2g mani back on and use another 60 trim sitting here for the time being. What would you do? Also, does anyone know how much deisel components charges to rebuild turbos?

Buy Shanes turbo, it might a little more laggy than the one you currently have but not by much.

gt3561 journal bearing style.
Deisel Components does it for a fair price; I think they quoted me like $200-250 for my 60-1, plus the cost of a new compressor wheel($75-100) since mine is kinda dinged up. Two week turnaround time from what I hear.

It seems that everyone who has used a GT35-sized turbo can't say enough good things about them. Depending on the power you want to make that may or may not be big enough for you. If you want it a little laggy stick with your .8x exhaust housing or bigger. If you have the option and funds to buy knew, I would. Rebuild the old one and sell it to recover some costs, or save it as a spare.

Get a GT3561 with a .63 A/R T3 exhaust housing. It should spool faster than the 60-trim .82 and make more power.

How much more laggier would shanes turbo be? I have a t4 manifold sitting around, but I don't really want to go to 3" ic piping. Are there any smaller T4 turbos that would work? I was thinking about the gt3561 like barton had last night.

Would the gt35r ball bearing spool about the same as the 60trim also? I only have a big greddy FMIC, but I know someone who is just siting on a GT35R ball bearing.

My turbo would be quite laggy, if it takes that long for you to spool a 60-trim with a stage whatever wheel.
You could run a T4 or GT35R or whatever. The most important factor in spool up will be the exhaust housing. The .82 T3 is a bit oversized for that 60-trim, so it spools slow. The GT35R normally comes with a .82 T3, but you can get it with a .63 T3 like Barton and Speedfreak have. If you got a T4, you could get a .58 A/R exhaust housing. A .68 T4 housing is similar in size to a .82 T3. You might even be able to throw a T4 exhaust housing on your current 60-trim, if you can find one cut for your exhaust wheel.

I planned on rebuilding my turbo but it isn't worth fixing because it would need a new cartrige. It would cost about as much to rebuild it as it would cost for a new one. I am thinking about the gt35r with the 82 ar exhaust housing. Do you think it would be a good turbo for a stock 2.0 shortblock? I have a ported head with cams, srings and retainers but I am wondering if you think it would be able to produce good useable power. I would be using it on a 2g FWD. I want something I can do good with on the highway and still be able to use it on the track. I just got my slicks in the mail today.

It all depends on the lag you are willing to live with. The .82 is going to be pretty laggy on a 2.0. That depends some on the compressor wheel and exhaust wheel too, but I would expect spool up in the 5k range.

I can get a gt35r for 1000 new and I think that is how much the other is going to be. I can deal with a little lag, but do you think it will be too laggy? I am not sure what size thewheels are, but I didn't think there were many variations for the wheels. I plan on throwing a 75 shot or so at it but not until it is running good first. Any idea how much the GT3561 costs? That is the turbo I was origionally thinking about. I know shane was selling them for $750 in the winter, but how much are they now. I wish I could have bought one at that price.

It is the T3 ont john L was running last year. It is a garret 60trim with a 82 ar from cheapturbo.com

A GT35R is the same turbo as a GT3561, except with a ball bearing center section. The SC61, GT3561, GT35R, FP3065, and a crap load more shop specific turbos all use the same 61mm compressor wheel. Some use different exhaust wheels and different style exhaust housings. A GT35R is the best all around bigger turbo for our cars, whether it's a 2.0l or 2.4l.
