Shifting weird, explain gear lube plz!
I solved my lock up problem in my transmission. However, now it makes weird noises and small things I can feel. I suspect gear lube would be the solution. Can I get an explaination on why it does this? Also, I do not understand how to find the right gear lube. I dont know what the numbers mean. I also dont know what GR3,4,5 etc means. Does the kind get effected by cold weather? You can PM me information or post.

GL-4 Redline is what you need. All the noises and things you can feel are probably the damaged created inside the tranny from when it locked up.

GL4 redline. Got it. Arent there certain kinds of weights and what not? Some gear lube doesnt even say what GL rating it has.

Archer, QPR, etc. Generally, only peformance shops will carry it, but I guess some Pep Boys do too.

QPR should have some in stock, but they seem to run out of it quick. At QPR you can get 2 qt MT-90 and 1 qt MTL for about $30.

Re: Shifting weird, explain gear lube plz!
We have it in stock, I just went through and explained to him in a PM however that it is not a cure all and he would probably be wasting money since his tranny is already making noise etc. I would use it for the purposes of protecting a good tranny, improved shifting, and maintained viscosity under load and higher RPM, reduced friction is also good. Putting it into a tranny that is at best questionable would likely be a waste of cash. I am not turning away business by any means, however I don't want people to buy stuff just because we sell it. Or for any other wrong reasons. If you change the fluid with the much less expensive fluid from Wally mart and the like, and the old stuff isn't full of transmission particulates, and the noise has dissapeared etc making you believe thet transmission will be worth the investment, then I say go with the redline, it is the best fluid IMO. Hope that helps.

Re: Shifting weird, explain gear lube plz!
Your explaination in the pm made my decision. I am just going to buy the good shit because it is only 30 dollars. I have to make a trip up there anyways friday, so what the hell! At least I'd know that i was purchasing the correct stuff for my tranny.

Re: Shifting weird, explain gear lube plz!
I would stick some cheaper stuff in it for like a couple hundred miles, drain it and then if the noises go away and shifting appears normal, put in the redline. That will clean out all the metal particles that could be chewing up the internals.

Re: Shifting weird, explain gear lube plz!
I agree with Peter, get a gallon of GL-4 for like $5 at Checker and just see what happens. If the noise goes away and shifting gets better, great...when you drain it and put Redline in the tranny will be that much more particle-free.

Re: Shifting weird, explain gear lube plz!
What weight to i need? I can do that I guess. Seems more practical. Clean it out, and so from there. Ive asked a few times and I still don't know what is the proper weight for my tranny and this time of year.

Re: Shifting weird, explain gear lube plz!
There are so many fluids that people didn't mention. And the truth behind it is that it doesn't matter what you tell people to use, it will still be hit or miss whether it works in their car or not. Some people like certain fluid and they usually stick with it. I don't think all DSM's like the same fluid, it has to do with how worn the tranny is already. Fluids that people swear by in their car might not work worth a shit in someone elses.
But if you want the king shit of fluids, I am pretty sure NEO is the way to go if you don't mind spending $80 a gallon.

Re: Shifting weird, explain gear lube plz!
SHIT, my car is barely worth 80$ lol. I might invest in a decent tranny and start from there. I'm going to find some gear lube cheap style, and see if that helps any. I figure if there are loose particles from the incident with locking gears, flushing it out might help some. If that helps, I will go with a synthetic gear lube. If it does not help, I will start shopping for a transmission. Thanks for the advise guys.

Re: Shifting weird, explain gear lube plz!
GM Syncromesh is way to thin to run in the DSM Tranny. I know there are people that do, I have, shortly followed by a destroyed tranny. Every case I know where it has been used has ended in failure. Neo is said to be decent, a bit overpriced but it has a good rep. It does however come down to opinion. Redline is excellent fluid with an amazing rep, I would have to see some proof that Neo was better to justify spending that kind of money. Proof in the form of 3rd party studies. Just a couple well knowns using it isn't proof IMO.

Re: Shifting weird, explain gear lube plz!
I have now used BG I & II, Redline, Royal Purple, Neo, GM Synchromesh and the cheap crap. Neo is hands down the best as far as good shifting, followed a ways back by the redline and BG II. Royal Purple feels a bit notchy and the GM sucked, you could tell it was way too thin.
I would go with Neo if I had a very good tranny, then Redline or BG II if it was just a decent tranny. YMMV
