Jeep Liberty
My parents are thinking about trading off something towards a new '04 Liberty, has anyone driven one? Have anything to say about them? I've never even been close to one so I really don't know anything about them.

One of my very good friends has one. She has had a few problems with the vehicle, but all issues were covered under warranty. I would say stay away from any Jeep product other than their Wranglers, but thats just me.

They ride pretty nice for having such a short wheelbase. Don't get the roof lights, they are VERY noisy on the freeway. I would have to say that the Saturn VUE is a better buy and alittle more useful.

The problem with brands such as Saturn is that back home there is not a Saturn dealer within an hour. So any warranty work or repairs needed to be done by the dealership would be a pain in the ass.

My family owns 2 brand new Saturn Vues and I must admit, for not liking those SUVs, I sure do like em. The ride is nice, its AWD, and plastic. I know most people dont care for Sauturn on this site, but for the dollar, they are great SUVs.

I thought i would get flamed Thanks for backen me up. That's just what i was going to say. I don't like SUVs but it was the smartest buy for my father. I do hear the dealership problem though.
So what is around your town then?

I can't imagine all the problems that would develop with their "unique" electric steering system and all belt driven transmissions. Not that they are now, but I would wonder how much repairs to those different types of systems would cause. Can you say trade in value?

Electric power steering has been around for many years. Land Rover has been using it in their Ranger for quite sometime now. As for the belt driven transmissions, commonly known at the CVT, I would also not be worried about reliability as the CVT is not a new concept. Here is a great website about CVTs: http://cvt.com.sapo.pt/ivt/ivt.htm
Anyways, back on topic. So besides telling me I should convince my parents to consider a Saturn, which is not going to happen, does anyone else have Jeep Liberty opinions?

Get a Grand Cherokee Limited like me! I've had it for 3 years now, and doesnt give me problems. Plus the new ones are supposed to be pretty bad ass.

the CVT is only for the 4 banger VUE. My father has the 3.5L Honda V6 powered model. It's very powerful for something so "light truckish" Also, it has a five speed auto...

1) At both shops I have worked at I have seen TOO many Jeep Cherokees in for work to ever consider owning one. One a day, everyday.
2) My parents also have the 3.5L Honda powerplants mated with the 5 spd. auto and AWD. They are nice SUVs tell them to have a look. Never hurts to look.

My Mom bought a '04 Grand Cherokee Limited last spring and so far it has been great. It makes a nice tow vehicle for our stuff, the interior quality is top-notch (thanks to Daimler), and the ride is very comfortable. The one downfall is of course the mileage....lucky to get over 20 mpg on the highway with the V8 and 5-speed auto (the straight-6 won't be much better).

The Vue is also a nice vehicle....but you must remember it is really not "utility" much like the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander. They are mainly a FWD unibody design that can engage AWD when needed whereas the Jeep is more of a truck-based type being RWD and AWD when needed. What do you parents plan on using the vehicle for? I used to be a fairly large fan of Saturn vehicles, but lately they have just become a little too "GM" for me. If Saturn gets fully incorporated into the regular GM lineup they might as well kiss their fan-base goodbye.

The plans for the vehicle are basically for it to be a daily driver for my mother. My dad has a '99 Cherokee that he drives daily. We really don't need the new vehicle, potentially a liberty, to be very 'truck based' since we have a '99 Dakota we use for hauling anything. One thing I absolutely can not stand about my dad's Cherokeee is that it is very hard to get in and out of without getting your pant legs dirty from the door frame.
