That... is... effin amazing. I new they were coming out with 3d printers, but they have gone leaps and bounds since the last time I seen one.

Re: 3D Printer..... that's right!
There is a local company that's called TRW Automotive that has a 3d printer. They use it to make multiple different types of automotive products. I use to work for them a few years back when they first came out with the rain sensors in Chrysler vehicles. Pretty neat stuff to see how everything is made and how it works. Pretty much anything that has to do with the heater, A/C or venting system inside the car, along with all the controls on the dash/steering column in all newer Chrysler vehicles pretty much come from TRW. I'm sure they have expanded to other vehicle makes but I know for sure they worked with Chrysler for awhile.

Re: 3D Printer..... that's right!
At the last company i worked for we had 3 - 3d printers.
We had 2 Zcorp 310s
and one Zcorp Spectrum z510s. (our main one)
Basically we mainly used it for prototypes. We had them sitting for over 5 years without working and i spearheaded the project to get the Z510 working again. Ended up having to clear out all of the lines, add new printer heads, and new nozzles. Our Z510 would print color. You can basically take any object from autocad and such and load it in there.

It basically works like an ink jet printer (ours actually uses print heads from an HP printer).
imagine printing off 1000 sheets of paper each as a layer of a model. Then you put all of the pieces of paper together and where there is ink is the actual model. These printers use the same logic, except instead of paper it uses a dust (like corn starch) and instead of ink it uses binder. it basically prints an image, then covers the image (like a blank page) and makes another image. and in the end the binder material creates a plastic model.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTXFIW1_2c0 this is a demo of the printer we had.
