Crazy close calls?
Has anyone ever had anything happen where you said WAT afterwards?
I was driving to a Dr Appt today and I was merging on to 100 North from 394 West. Im in the right lane after I merge. There is someone to my left that wants to merge and get off on the 55 exit.
So I slow down a bit and move into the left lane to pass. They end up staying in that lane after all. So I downshift to 3rd and hit the gas to pass them on the left.
Well, thats when my rear wheels start spinning and the rear end slides out to the left! I try and recover, and it brings the rear too far out to the right. So I counter again and it flings the rear end fast to the left again and keeps going. I end up doing a 360 at 60MPH and recover when it comes back around all the way.
After that im pointed back in the right direction and I continue on my way in shock that I just pulled that off. LOL
I didnt hit anyone, and there was no one around me close enough to be in harms way.. but holy crap. I was close to the wall on the left side, id say inches. I felt the shoulder I think, and didnt know if I nicked my car on the wall or not. I got to my appointment, checked out the car, not a scratch.
I got lucky!!

Re: Crazy close calls?
When I got my RS a while back, I was driving on the highway late at night. At the time I had the stock 14" wheels with bald tires on them and hadn't noticed that the highway had completely iced over in a certain spot. Driving along at 40-50 mph and then I notice my back end start to come out. I correct it and then it swings out the other way even more and so I go to correct that and I made the mistake of hitting the brakes to slow down and that sent my car in a 180 going roughly 40 mph towards the ditch in a slide. Hit the grass and stomped the brakes and I eventually came to a stop. The car was halfways in the ditch with snow underneath the tires. I let off the brakes for a second to test and I started to go in the ditch more. Not wanting to go in more from the tires spinning, I threw the car in 3rd and started to go and I pulled right out amazingly. Drove about 20 mph on the road after that back home lol.

Re: Crazy close calls?
Don't lie, you did it on purpose!
One time in highschool I was for sure going to rear-end a hooptie due to ice on the road and there was no where to go--there was a whole slew of cars parked on the side of the road and the rear of the hooptie lined up with the front bump of the last parked car. There was a few open spaces next to the hooptie, but no way I could get in there.
Just as I came up to hit the hooptie, it started to turn left. I got the rear-end to slide to the left and the front end I turned towards the parking spot. The hooptie pulled to the let *just* enough for my little vw rabbit (gti!) to squeeze through into the spot. Rear end I was able to keep from coming around too much and got it into the spot. Keep in mind I'm still going like 30mph and there are more parked cars not far ahead of me.....AND I had a half-eaten, open face (cream cheese up) bagel in my mouth! We were on our way back from lunch!
The hooptie continues to turn and I kick the rear end to the right now and pull the car back into the driving lane, out of the parking spots. I look at my buddy in the passenger seat and we just erupt laughing, cause I *still* had the bagel in my mouth, and we came through unscathed!

Re: Crazy close calls?
Yeah, I had one a week ago. My right rear brake caliper sticks a little sometimes, so the Grand Am can be a bit of a drift machine sometimes.
I was taking 101 North to Wayzata, going around the curve onto the Gray's Bay bridge. Rear end decides it's drift time and I'm sliding sideways around the corner onto the bridge with oncoming traffic. I already have the counter steer in and am just sliding sideways in the lane. The oncoming traffic freaked me a little and made me think "what should I do" for a second. The answer was wait for the corner to end, and a little more throttle.
Yours sounds a bit more scary to me, I’m used to my car doing it, just there’s normally not any oncoming traffic. Corrections at speeds over 50 MPH start getting very hard to get right, very easy to over correct since a small wheel movment produces large results (think lane changes).

Re: Crazy close calls?
This past fall, day after an autox, and it's raining. I was too tired the night before to drop my tire pressures and put all of my crap in the back of the Talon, so the rear's light as fuck.
I'm getting onto 494 at France, and enter the cloverleaf at a speed no higher than what I'd normally do in the rain, and of course, most of the turn is off-camber. The rear decides to slide out, so I apply countersteer to catch it, which I do, but the car is still sliding toward the outside of the turn, where there happens to be a wall. With inches left, the driver's rear tire catches the curb and bounces off, pushing the car back to the inside with the rear back in line.

Re: Crazy close calls?
Back when I was 10 years old or so we were coming down off the continental divide on I-90 heading towards Bozeman, MT and there was a shaded area where ice hadn't melted, and we did a few large fishtails and eventually a 360 on the interstate. Miraculously we stayed in the middle of the road (large barrier in center and guardrail + cliff on outside). We started the whole thing about 60mph, and ended up around 70mph since it was a bit steep.
Last summer when it was lightly raining I was on a tighter than normal cloverleaf and the back end just gave up all at once and did an almost instant 180, I didn't even have time to react, it was weird. So I'm in the center of the onramp, facing backwards at a complete stop gaining my composure, and a PT cruiser comes up in front of me while I'm trying to do a 7 point turn to get the car back normal. Freaked me out.

Re: Crazy close calls?
gfoing on 35w back twards WI at 3:30 on a fridaynight/saturday morning after hanging out down on uni. i was going along at about 75 in my awd and out of fucking nowhere a DUCK malks out onto the road. im in the left lane about to come into lino lakes so i swerve to the left to maybe be able toi squeek past it in the ditch like ive done many a times. well i forgot i was on some bald ass ripped up tires on my stock stealy's and i touch the ditch and it starts to slide. well i know that this probably isn't gonna end up good so i lock em up and hope for the best. i pull the e brake to try and get it to spin me to a stop well i notice than im strting to move over into the right lane. theres noone around so im not nervouse then it starts to come back around 360 so i figure f**k it i put it in 2nd cuz im still doin about 40 and drop the clutch with the wheel crankednext thing i know im walkin this bish sideways down 35 at about 35 and it straitens out just as i was aboutto hit a sign. i never even stopped just kept on truckin, i figure if i stop then i might find out what i just broke so as long as i make it home i dont care. long story short i broke the lock ball on the transfer case drive shaft so when we went to pull the transfer case out the shaft came with it.

Re: Crazy close calls?
About 2 years ago I was driving to the Chinese Buffet for lunch. It was me and my co-worker in the Talon. I turned onto Hwy 96 and was driving normally. My co-worker wanted to see what the car had so he told me to gun it, so of course I did. Got up to speed real quick, then had to slow down quick because the buffet is pretty close. I hit the brakes fairly hard but my car has a horrible allignment. The car starts sliding, pointing towards the curb, I turn left, the car grabs and whips back and does a 180 right in the middle of Hwy 96. The car died as it was still in gear, and I had gone slightly past our turn. So, we're looking at the oncommoning traffic slowing down, just started it right up and drive the wrong way into the parking lot. That got our blood pumping pretty good!

Re: Crazy close calls?
Crazy! You were with me for my two of my incidents (both in the S2k). First was when we spun at Opus and went into the grass backwards and second was when we did the 90mph drift at the crest of a hill on 38 north of my parents' cabin.
The highways are definitely slick right now though. A few nights ago on 394 I down-shifted to 3rd, hit the gas, and started bouncing off the rev-limiter. At first I thought my clutch was was done but then I realized it was just that icy and my rear was starting to come around a bit on me. Let of the gas and all was well; I'm lucky the car kept tracking straight.

Re: Crazy close calls?
This one winter not too long ago after it had snowed and traffic was somewhat slow. I was driving on 694 going west and taking bridge to 35e South when all of a sudden this red eclipse a few car lengths infront of me does a 90degree spin and ends up backing up slowly into the wall. I knew if I had to brake, I wouldnt stop before t'boning him, so I said fuck it and squeezed by between the concrete wall and the eclipse's rear while the gap kept getting smaller. I prep'd for impact and made it out unscratched and kept driving while traffic built up.
There are those times when you say "fuck it, I cant do anything about this situation so I'll deal with the damage." This was one of them, hahaha.
