Good deal on HDDVD player

I found a good deal on a HDDVD player and thought Id pass it along. Its on circuitcity.com. $197 after a $100 instant discount. For a Toshiba HD-A2 The HD-A2 is one of the lower line models it outputs at 1080i and upconverts standard DVD's to 1080i. Some of the other models output at 1080p but for the price i couldnt pass it up.

Heres a link. http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Toshi...oductDetail.do

I used the 24 min instore pickup and everything went great.

Re: Good deal on HDDVD player

I personally would get a Blu-Ray player over an HD-DVD one.

What's the line on Blue Ray vs HD now? I am starting to see more Blue Ray taking up more space on shelves these days at a few places, but I'm hoping the HDs stick around as then I'd just add the xBox player.

Re: Good deal on HDDVD player

I still think Blu-Ray has about 2/3 of the market or something so far. Target has more than double the space for Blu-Ray compared to HD-DVD.

I've read that if it came down to it, Microsoft would make (get someone to make) an external Blu-Ray player for the X360 if HD-DVD died out.

Re: Good deal on HDDVD player

Theyr'e suposed to be pretty close. But after I saw a HDDVD at walmart I figured they would win the battle. Plus the fact that I can still play my old dvd upconverted and HDDVDs come with standard definiton on the reverse side made me deside on HDDVD.

I just finished watching The Invisible upconverted and it was awsome. I'm very happy with the player so far.

Blu-Ray can upconvert older DVD's as well. I did it with Hostel Part 2 the other day and it looked pretty nice.

Does it freeze for no reason once or twice per movie? I've got a pretty new regular Toshiba DVD player and it pauses here and there, even on brand new DVD's.

I bet Sony loses this battle just like they did in VHS vs. Beta.

My guess is that it will be a longer, drawn out battle than the VHS and Beta one. Most consumers are ok with regular DVD's so far because they don't have High-Def sets to really see a difference.

I am rooting for Blu-Ray because of all the potential it has and will have in the future (200 gb on 1 disc, damn!).

Re: Good deal on HDDVD player

Yes, Blu-Ray is the better data format. HD-DVD has some good backing though. I think the deciding factor is the PS3's already have a Blu-Ray built in, so there are tons of them out there compared to HD-DVD players. Sony was pretty smart in that aspect. I hate these stupid wars, some agency should decide which one is going to be the standard and go with it. Then people don't get stuck with obsolete equipment.

I agree, these battles do nothing but hurt consumers. Unless of course one maker gets really desperate to win and offers some huge price cuts
