Cam sizing, what to do with?

So most of you are familiar with the setup i wish to go to, question i have is are 280s gonna be good enough, are they too big or small.
I have been trying to do reading on this, but i haven't found enough to lean either way.
Some say it is perfect for stroker, some say too small if you are not revving high (8500+ rpm).
At this point i just don't know anymore, and i so figured that i would ask.

I like the FP3 or 3x's for strokers. You NEED dual springs though.

Have you flow benched your head? If your going all out, then i would recommend flow benching your head then call up comp cams and have them help you select a cam or have them grind you one. It really is not that expensive and you would maximize your cams potential.

Re: Cam sizing, what to do with?

Sorry for not being clear, i guess the thing is that i am reading that with 280s, that the bottom end flow is nonexistent and i don't want to wait to 4k for all the power at once, maybe i should go down to 272s?

I basically have the setup you are trying to build. I love my 272's.

I say go for HKS 280's or 272's. If you need to go bigger later, go for it. But for now, tried and true results.

^thanks, i know that some of your around, and i will be picking the hell out of your brains for the next few months while i do.
I appreciate all the help.
Do you need a spring/retainer kit for these?
i will probably get one anyway to take advantage of the 8000-8500 redline i am hoping to have.

HKS 272's on a 2.4 are about like stock cams on a 2.0. With the 2.4 you can go BIG! I have Crower 415's in my car, they are huge and still give a good midrange. I would look at the FP3's like Steve said, you probably want a bit bigger than 280's.

I'd like to compare dyno graphs or go for a ride in both cars when both are running well(so maybe never? :P ). It would be interesting to see if we can see or feel any difference.

Re: Cam sizing, what to do with?

I had 272's in my car in the beginning. Totally different car with the big cams. I can imagine what will happen when the stock manifold goes away this winter!

Re: Cam sizing, what to do with?

ecoli has made big power on the 272's, so don't count them out. I've thought about the 280's also, but the 272's work well in my car with the 2.4L, not quite sure about the "stock feel" comparison as mentioned by Jet, but I never had a 2.0L with stock cams either.

Re: Cam sizing, what to do with?

With the setup your are building 272's/similar or 280's/similar would work just fine, I would also look into a SMIM and bigger throtle body. Springs and retainers would be a realy good idea also, crower springs and titanium retainers would be the weapon of choice unless other whise specified. I also wanted to look into how stiff of a behive spring I could buy and use the Evo magnesium retainers which are way lighter then a titanium retainer of the DSM size.

I would go 272 simply for this ^ reason, also they have been proven to make good power.
i dont know a whole lot about the subject. but i do know its very easy to get in to the "bigger is better" mentality when it comes to cams, and allot of people do end up over camming there engine with unsatisfactory results.

Re: Cam sizing, what to do with?

The 272's give you a power band like stock cams, albeit a little more power. If you look at my dyno chart I am holding power way higher than I should be with the stock intake manifold, that is because of the big cams. I got about 700 rpm larger power band with them.

Re: Cam sizing, what to do with?

We are going from HKS 272s to FP3x cams on a 2G with a GT35R that makes a tad over 400awhp on the DD at 19psi on pump gas. I want to see if we notice a big difference, but it is still going to be a while before the car is ready.
