towing

I have had quite a few people lately inquiring about towing out of state and was curious what do you guys think is a good price for that.

Lets say to Chicago, that was this weekends choice of a tow, 400 miles each way. about 15mpg, so about 60 galons of fuel, $200 worth of gas alone.

I called some places around the town and they want anywhere from $800 to $1500...

I am just looking for your guys's opinions on it.. if you were towing your car.. etc etc..

Re: towing

I'd say at least $600. But when you take the $200 out for gas it's only $400 in your pocket for wear and tear, hookup, and actual cost per mile. you time alone in what can roughly be a 6-7 hour trip in traffic each way from the cities that's only $28 an hour for a 14 hour round trip. It's not a bad rate for your time, but for what it actually is, i think you'd want to get around 35 or more per hour.

Re: towing

$800 seems pretty fair to me once you factor in the cost of wear & tear on your equipment, your dining costs, a possible hotel for a night (Chicago and back would make for a VERY long day), plus some $$$ to cover your time.

At that price though, someone whould be better of using a car transport/trucking company.

Re: towing

i recomended the transport/trucking company to many people and their response was.

1. its going to take 3 weeks
2. high rate of damage to vehicle
3. scratches all over
4. not secured storages
5. cars too low they won't tow, and if they do say goodbye to your body kit

and they want it done asap

Re: towing

If they need it done ASAP charge them a grand for priority service. They're happy, you're paid. If you need a driver...

Re: towing

It's hit and miss. I can get cars delivered from Chicago or Milwaukee for around $350, but that doesn't include lowered Civics with body kits or house to house, This is from an auction to my shop, just a perk of being in this business.

I'd expect to pay quite a bit more for personalized service like Enes provides. How much to just be at the track each weekend in case my car breaks?

Re: towing

i don't want to screw the guy over on charging him too much, but i also don't want to screw myself over either. the repairs alone on the truck this year were about 4500, new trany, pump and few other things.

I basicly want to have both of us benefit from helping each other.. thats it.

Give him a cap and tell him you will charge up to that amount accordingly. Then you'd have a long drive to think about it

I agree on the cap idea. If you don't want to screw him over. Just keep all your expinse from the trip. Then tax say like 10% onto that. And there ya go. You and him both are happy. Remember Chicago...is always busy ... night or day.

Re: towing

I guess it just depends what part of chicago you go to. If it is closer to gary, Indiana. then up the amount but if it is right off 90, 94, 290 or 294. then you might not charge as much. the more of chicago you drive the more you should charge. I would get the money up front if I were you.

Re: towing

I had a car shipped from Virginia to here for $526. It took 12 days though. That was through DAS and the car was in great shape when it arrived. It all depends on how soon he wanted it done and ho wbusy you are though.

Re: towing

Enes, your service is a bit different then other transport services like the reasons you mentioned. Because of that their is a different value. For a Chicago trip or something in that milage range, I'd charge somewhere between $600-800.

Re: towing

His is completely different and quicker than other services. My car went all over the US before coming here and was in Texas the day before arriving.
