Re: The Spazmobile
You should be able to wiggle the turbo/manifold around enough to get the manifold off without messing with anything on the turbo, then just use a pair of vice grips on it and it should come right out. Definitely go with all bolts next time. Soooo much easier to deal with.

Re: The Spazmobile
Why not just take the turbo off and do it right? Do an oil change and coolant flush while your at it then. That's a pretty easy break, the shitty ones, are when they break off at the bottom...no fun in that.

Re: The Spazmobile
I was planning on doing a full update on Monday, after I get the car and pics from MAP.
I put off doing the turbo bolt because I was having issues with the clutch, specifically the pressure plate warping itself for no reason (I don't beat on this thing, let alone launch it enough to cause that), and since I wasn't doing much boosting on a slipping clutch, I figured it could wait. I wasn't about to do a tranny drop in a freezing garage, so I couldn't say no to the $500 MAP was asking.
Anyway, they get the car in, go to drop the tranny, and the bolts for the crossmember fell right out of the core support. Apparently it was so far rusted the crossmember was barely attached. So not left with many options, as well as a dire need for a car, I told them to go ahead and fix it.
They also said they'll take care of that bolt, so I'm effectively getting back a problem-free car.
At this point, the build is going to be put on hold until I can get my hands on something in much better shape to swap everything over to.

Re: The Spazmobile
dude, sorry to hear about this. MN rust sucks. How bad is the rust in general? Is the car rotting out all over underneath? If not, maybe you should just stick with it. If its really that bad, I wouldn't bother finding a shell to swap stuff into. Just get a whole new car.
Did MAP check for crank endplay while they had the trans off? Weird clutch issues are sometimes due to crankwalk.

I didn't ask them to, doesn't mean they didn't, but they did say that the pressure plate was quite warped.
Also, last I checked, pedal pressure is variable with CW, it doesn't just sit at one point. And it definitely doesn't cause the pedal to stiffen up again when you slip the clutch a bunch. Believe me, it was one of my first thoughts, and nothing points to it.

Re: The Spazmobile
good. Yeah, doesn't sound like that is the case. With CW you get differing clutch engagement points, and the car is hard to drive. Ask me how I know.

Re: The Spazmobile
the shell it pretty much rotted out. right before the fall cruise we put a bunch of stuff in to spaz's car. the rockers, rear 1/4 panel wheel wells, rear frame rails, gas tank shield, ect are rotted out. Swaping shells is not hard to do and only takes a few days to do it.

Re: The Spazmobile
Sounds like you should limp it thru the winter and find you a new shell. See my post about the warehouse space, i'll rent you some room to do your swap

That's the plan. Since I'm no longer throwing money at mods and am getting a few hundred back from taxes, chances are good that I'm going to forgo a shell and pick up something running at that point, but we'll see. It'll be a while before the snow melts, after all.

Re: The Spazmobile
Yea, idk what the point of doing a shell swap would be, he's got a pretty stck car on a high-mileage 7-bolt (not that there's anything wrong with that)...a simple part-out and a new car would be the way to go if you're going to be done with this one.
It's a dsm though...sooner or later you (not the car) get to a breaking point and you need to just be done with it or take a break (if you can).

Or get a reliable Daily, and make the DSM a project like myself and many others have done

Re: The Spazmobile
So, I present to you, MitsuStyle, a picture I call... Two Core Supports.
Rust is ghey.
Regardless, I have my car back and it's running great, shifts great, and with the return spring on the pedal they replaced, it feels like a brand new car (well, that part does, the rest still feels 14 years old). Now I just need to bleed the brakes and my feet will be happy.

I was about there a week ago, but I've come to terms with the cost of having this fixed since and it should stay fairly reliable after this. Not having to deal with the work myself has helped, too.
