For the amount of time you spend on boost VS off boost, not really. Engine bay temps will probably be putting more heat in the system, than actually cooling charge air.

With that small of surface area to cool it I thought you might heat soak it over time on the street. Obviously it will work awesome on the track. I am not a pro with air/water, so I was just curious.

Only time will tell, but I don't think it will be an issue.

Re: Finally getting stuff done on our cars

Your car looks awesome Swanny, I really like the new setup.

Johns car looks to be coming along nicely as well. Although about the most recent discussion about the intercooler. I would carefully watch the intake air temps on the street when going through multiple gears at full boost. I have a bad feeling it'll heat soak in that situation. At the track.. it'll work. But when on the street, and in boost for some nice long highway pulls(or repeated pulls..), I think it may be an issue.

Re: Finally getting stuff done on our cars

Looks kick ass, guys!

For what it's worth, computer geeks have water cooled computers for a while now. I've read a handful about these systems and once thought about building my own.

One thing is that the more liquid you have in your system the harder it will be to heat up to the same temperature where if you had less liquid being heated by the same amount of heat.

Second, the key is the ambient temperature. Regardless of how much surface area you have on that water cooler you will not get below the ambient temperature. Ice will of course help this, but ice melts. Same rules apply for air to air intercoolers, but water is a much better conductor than air.

I personally don't see an issue with this setup while street driving and staying out of the boost. They could even install a small fan or two to help move air through the cooler during low speed driving away from the track, but then again I wouldn't expect the air charge to be that much of a concern when not under boost.

Re: Finally getting stuff done on our cars

Air temp will be watched, I plan on doing testing on the dyno with no air flow over the heat exchanger and only the pump running and will steady state (full load at X rpm at X mph) and watch boost/temps then do the same with air flow over the heat exchanger then with ice/dry ice. Pump gas will be low low boost, low timing, and back to back pulls with little/no time for the water to cool down to compansate for the stress of spirited street driving, which I never did a hole lot of and plan to do even less of now with the new laws but if its all out down town for cash, race gas(c-16,vp inport, E98, plus nitrous, what ever works best) so heat will not be an issue then. The fuel system will support the 1600s at full tilt and should flow 92-103 GPM on pump gas pending specific gravity, and 82-87GPM on C-16 pending specific gravity, and 91GPM with ethonal. This is based on 600lbs/hr flow rate with 13.5volts@45psi. If I have to a 5-10 gallon water tank can be added later, or switch to a full front mount heat exchanger, similar to a 04 Cobra.

Working on my car a little every now and then but I set it on the corner weights last night and it weighs 2520. But I have about 400lbs including me to add to the car, maybe more, but I hope less.

Re: Finally getting stuff done on our cars

Well John and I have been swamped up here. My car is an assembled motor away from running and John's car needs some man hours.

With our current workload getting to the track this season is seeming like a longshot. We will update this thread when we get some free-time to work on the cars.
Hell even Ryan has resorted to racing his beater stealth on the road courses this season.

Thanks for the continued interest everyone.

Just a few pics from a month ago. Still trying to find time to finish the wire harness and few other items. I am looking to just get it running this year if possible, but we will see.
