John has 2 he is looking to get rid of, will most likely trade one in. Would probably keep the 95 Ram but IDK.

No kidding, this is gonna be hurting the used car market a lot.. especially for the 'beater' type cars and SUVs.

Re: Might be trading in my Eclipse on the Cash for Clunkers program
An Eclipse won't qualify based on the mileage. See http://www.cars.gov/index.php/faq#category-07 for all the details. You also have to have had the car titled in your name for the last year as well as had insurance on said vehicle for the last year. That knocks out most of the would be traders in this situation.
And to be honest, it's not quite as good as it appears anyways. The new car stores knew this was coming well in advance and jacked up their prices accordingly. I'm sure the brands going down the poopshoot(Chrysler, Pontiac and probably GM) are the best deals here. For example, I immediately ran over to Morrie's Nissan to look at a cheap Versa to drive for work. They have a base price of $9999. But after dealer prep, and other miscellaneous BS, the cheapest was almost $12k, no air, no radio and a stick. You want the far better looking hatchback with no options"? $15k. Thanks, I'll stick with my trusty STi that gets 21mpg all day long.

It will hurt the slightly used market for late model cars even more. Why by a car a year or 2 old when you can buy a new one and trade in a junker for the same price or even less. There will always be beaters around as not everyone has the money or ability to buy a new car.

You can get a Versa for 10.7k (MSRP $9,990 + destination), just the sedan version. That is/was one car on my possible list. I like the hatchbacks better but they are more expensive.
This program is still a good deal and I don't see how the MSRP prices changed on any car in anticipation of the event. Sure it may limit dealer incentives on some makes but nobody jacked up the price. If you don't like it, have them order what you want. Hell it is a new car.
I am currently looking at:
honda civic
honda fit
versa (like the hatchback) but rather pay 2-3k for a honda
Yaris (prob 4 door)
I am pretty much looking for a base model to keep costs low. I do not need a new car but trading in a $800 pickup for $4500 off is a great deal. It will be hard getting rid of my honda insight (if I buy a new car). Not going to jump to make any purchase though. Prob going to get rid of a couple cars and look at a multiple trade (hopkins honda is accepting them involving an accord and/or honda insight with my clunker).
This is one hell of a deal for someone with a shitty car interested in a new one.

Kind of looked into the versa for a friend as well. Cheapest I could find in the twin cities was around $10,700. I doubt prices were increased as there is no real incentive for dealers. It is getting towards year end and dealers want to get rid of their 09s anyhow. I bought a new civic a few months ago and the prices aren't any different. I saved $4,000 on mine actually but it was due to another reason.

Some nice cars there. I would take the Rover, Benz SUV, or the 2000 ish ram.

Re: Might be trading in my Eclipse on the Cash for Clunkers program
I am trying to figure out what they are doing with these and cannot get very far. I know they use a solution to lockup the engine and that a salvage yard has to crush it within 180 days.
It talks about how a dealer can sell them at a salvage auction so there must be some usable parts. I am doubting they are going through the process for scrap metal (to recycle). It wouldn't make sense for the gov to just bury all these cars. Doesn't pass the smell test.
Seems that most salvage yards get rid of most of the parts to a vehicle within 180 days so I am not sure this is going to be horrible for the salvage market. If I get more time I am going to look into it but it won't affect my decision in getting rid of my old truck.
I wouldn't be suprised if the above vehicles (nicer ones) got more than the $4500. It works as a $200 scrap trade in and a $4300 voucher. A dealer getting a nicer land rover would have a larger salvage value than an 88 F150 and most likely entitle the customer to a larger than $200 scrap value.

Re: Might be trading in my Eclipse on the Cash for Clunkers program
That Land Rover isn't worth as much as you think. It's their little junky model based off the Ford Escape, and if it's got over 100k miles on it or has any problems, it's worth about $4500 anyways. I always liked those Mercedes ML's though, pretty cheap for what you get, although they are made in America and their reliability shows that.

I like how you're perfectly fine with trading your car in to be destroyed, one we're starting to see less and less of as years pass, but shame on everyone else for destroying perfectly decent cars and trucks you see multitudes of on the road every day.

Thats because I dont like my car. Its been a hassle to me since day one, that is why.It won a lottery ticket when I saved it from the scrap pile and its repaid me by being a pos. You dont want me to get started on why I dislike my car. I changed my mind about the program because I became informed and I would have no part in it.
