Might be trading in my Eclipse on the Cash for Clunkers program
1 Attachment(s)
I might be trading in my GSX for the cash for clunkers deal since my car applies (it gets under 18mpg). I have been looking at new Impalas and might be trading my GSX in since its not worth really anything. Maybe this weekend I might actually pull the trigger on it.

Re: Might be trading in my Eclipse on the Cash for Clunkers program
What do you want for it? What will they give you?
|
Re: Might be trading in my Eclipse on the Cash for Clunkers program
If its running fine, you can sell it for more than they'll give you, or better yet, keep it. Don't be dumb.

Re: Might be trading in my Eclipse on the Cash for Clunkers program
The salesman I was dealing with said they would give me $4,500 for it with the program. I dont know I just was thinking about it getting something that get better mpg and has more room. I mean I like my car but how could I pass on that trade in value. The whole idea of the motor being destroyed and the car being sent to scrap being disheartning, espically with all the work I just had done to that engine (mainly rebuilt)

Re: Might be trading in my Eclipse on the Cash for Clunkers program
I wouldn't do it, Me and so many other people are against ths cash for clunkers program sure its good for the new car buyer, but think of all the used car dealers and the salvage yards this is hurting, when you turn a car in for the program the engine&tranny has to be destroyed and i think the cars even have to be crushed. They should be encouraging recycling and buying used parts i mean what costs more to the environment making a new part or buying a used one?

Re: Might be trading in my Eclipse on the Cash for Clunkers program
no kidding. It is going to be much harder on our environment... seriously. Scrapping tons of cars, making tons of new ones. Huge impact. Liberals who contradict themselves, super. What else is new?

Re: Might be trading in my Eclipse on the Cash for Clunkers program
F-ing do it. That car is no where near worth the $4500 trade in. I am not sure that your car will qualify however. The salesman is most likely going to sell you on a car, put in the voucher request and be denied.
Looking at cars.com, a 95 eclipse mpg is: City: 21 – 22 Highway: 27 – 32. They don't differentiate between the turbo or AWD but the combined MPG is likely over the 18 mark. No real way to prove that it only gets XXmpg now. I am considering it but I have the perfect vehicle for it: 88 Ford F150. Will have no issue at all qualifying. Only issue is that I already have a commuter which gets 58mpg (honda insight). Considering selling many cars and getting a new civic. Regarding the environmental issue, that is one of the reasons they implimented the program. Want to get rid of poor emmision and MPG vehicles and try and help the economy by boosting auto sales. It is expected that they may run out of funding so if he doesn't, someone else will. |

Re: Might be trading in my Eclipse on the Cash for Clunkers program
I only wish this started a few months sooner as I bought a new civic. Could have traded in a truck worth $800 for the credit. I could be some what against getting rid of a good car depending on what it is, but you need to do what makes the most economic sense to you. I am not sure what the physical requirements are. Maybe you could take all of the doors, fenders, hood, trunk and most of the interior out and sell them? You should look into is a little more. I am pretty sure a dsm won't get you $4,500. It also depends on how much better the new car is for mpg if I remember correctly.

Re: Might be trading in my Eclipse on the Cash for Clunkers program
^^^ Yes, it has to get worse than 18 combined (city and highway) so I don't see how the eclipse would qualify.

Re: Might be trading in my Eclipse on the Cash for Clunkers program
That driveline is pretty much irreplaceable. Any chance that you'd be able to get the $4500 after a motor/tranny pull?
Or would you be able to get the $4500 or more after a part-out? The FedGov vouchers are the easy way out, but not the only way. |
Re: Might be trading in my Eclipse on the Cash for Clunkers program
Car must be in running condition.
|
Re: Might be trading in my Eclipse on the Cash for Clunkers program
it doesnt go by the factory ratings on cars.com it goes by a newer epa rating, not sure if its any different.
|
Re: Might be trading in my Eclipse on the Cash for Clunkers program
Well I am assuming they are going by the EPA rating when they were new which should be similar to cars.com. Hard to adjust an EPA rating for a 14 year old car and say it is accurate.
If you can trade it, do it. My guess is that it won't be approved when they send it in. I called Hopkins Honda on Friday and dealers could get approved on Fri, vouchers aren't avail until Mon. They give you $200 for a trade in, charge sales tax, and apply for the voucher. Then take $4300 off of the remaining balance when the vehicle is approved. |

Please don't send a perfectly good DSM to the crusher. :(

I think some people are in denial about the dsm being considered a "clunker." Any word if he did this yet? Did it qualify? |
Re: Might be trading in my Eclipse on the Cash for Clunkers program
I know this isn't an official list of acceptable cars but here is the list that edmunds.com came up with as far as eligable vehicles go:
http://www.edmunds.com/cash-for-clun...-vehicles.html Note, 3000gt does qualify but eclipses and talons do not. |
