Heavy gas smell..

I don't know about the smell outside the car but I had a problem where the white ring on top of the pump assembly wasn't tightened down and it felt I was going to suffocate, it was worse when the weather got nicer cause I would drive with the windows down and it would pull more fumes out of the tank.
