I figured it was the rears as the rear would slide back and forth a bit (similar to launching an AWD on wet ground or in snow).

Well, the fronts will spin before the rears due to weight transfer, unless to were launching in reverse. You won't feel the fronts spin in the way you feel the rears spin and kick the rear end out.
