ok so i finally got out to my garage today with a multimeter to try and figure this out, and it turns out that the aftermarket wire colors are backwards. there was a blue and a black, naturally i thought black was ground. but the voltmeter told me different. blue was ground and black was power. So now i have 10k's worth of light and no issues.
