If it's aftermarket gauges you are referring to needing for starting up a new setup, my personal opinion is that a boost/vacuum is great to have, a wideband is a good gauge to have overall but not absolutely needed for just start-up purposes. Oil, water, that's all part of your stock cluster so you really don't "need" aftermarket ones for start-up purposes. They may have a use once you start beating on it, but for start-up I'd say those aren't neccessary.
