Choosing gauges
 

What are the must have gauges before start up? I'm definitely going to pick up an AEM wideband and an Autometer boost gauge. Oil pressure maybe? I'm thinking about autometer gauges for now until I can afford really nice ones like Defi. The autometer would transfer onto the other car once I get the nice gauges.

I would want oil pressure, wideband, and boost/vacuum. That's about all you need for the first start up. (Oil pressure gauge for when you prime the system so you know when you build up pressure, wideband to tune in new injectors, vacuum to know you have no vac leaks and car is running healthy.)

Check out Prosport gauges, good quality and they look nice.

Add water temp to the list and that's all you will ever need for a street car.

If it's aftermarket gauges you are referring to needing for starting up a new setup, my personal opinion is that a boost/vacuum is great to have, a wideband is a good gauge to have overall but not absolutely needed for just start-up purposes. Oil, water, that's all part of your stock cluster so you really don't "need" aftermarket ones for start-up purposes. They may have a use once you start beating on it, but for start-up I'd say those aren't neccessary.

EGT is another one that would be good to have for tuning purposes. I agree with the prosport suggestion. I picked one up for boost in my talon, and it looks like it will be pretty cool (i got the electronic because of the opening ceromony. LOL) .

Yeah those prosport ones do seem to look nice, especially for the price. I ended up with Stewart Warner though because the Pro Sport only went to 30psi and I was really wanting one that went to 35 or 40psi just to be safe.

Prosport for the win! Mine Is Ductaped on my dash right now :P untill my a pillar gets in. They work nicely accurate to.

EGT sensors are just about useless if you have a wideband.

I don't know if I would say any after market gauges are a "must" for start up. Just make sure your stock oil pressure gauge works, your stock water temp gauge works, and make sure the thing isn't super rich.

I had a prosport in my car and really liked the peak/warn function on it, that way you could keep your eyes on other gauges or the road. The only down side is that it only goes up to 30psi, so I sold it and picked up a used aem boost gauge. I really like the aem boost gauge because it was just a tiny bit more expensive than picking up a brand new AEM 5 bar map sensor and I can log and there was no real added cost when I went speed density. I also have the aem wide band gauge which I really like because I can log that too.
