Ice Season!

Well I just ran my first ice race ( I'm still struggling to get the terminology down) today. Just like the autox setup except its a much larger more open track. Saw speeds up around 70 and down around 25. My friend from school let me drive his 92 Talon that we recently went through and redid a lot of things. I think total we put around 28 laps on that car today, and it didn't flinch once. Great car, a lot of fun. Anyways, here's the pics I took:

My other friends also came, one owning the red 318ti. He was running faster than the awd's even!

Then of course, on my 3rd run I came in just a little too hot from 70 on the back straight and plowed sideways into the pile on the side. Ended up losing the door molding on my little offroad excursion:

My g/f took one video and I'll post that up when it's done uploading to youtube. There should be more pics in the next few days.

EDIT: Here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoMapo4aXfA

Sorry, no in-car. Totally spaced on that when I was out enjoying myself. lol Next weekend hopefully.

I wish I had a car I wasn't afraid to do this kind of thing with.

Re: Ice Season!

It was a blast! I wouldn't recommend doing it in a car you're trying to take care of. The ice is farely bumpy and rough.

I also posted a link to the video. Not the best, but it's all I have.

Funny you should say that. My friend's Talon has been his daily since it left school last semester. He drove down from Redwing that morning, we both beat on it for around 28 runs total, then he drove it back to Redwing. Pretty cool considering when he brought it in, it was on a trailer and wouldn't idle or move.

Now it has an XTD Stage 3 6 puck setup with chromoly flywheel, a hard uicp with Greddy BOV, and a 3 inch turbo back N1 exhaust. We also deleted cruise, ABS, A/C, and all emissions. Idling problem ended up being the intake manifold gasket. Car wouldn't move due to the clutch disc having all of it's friction material inside the bellhousing and not on the disc. We also ended up doing new stock brakes all around and relocated the battery to the hatch.

It's only on WG boost due to the silly boost creep. Climbs up to about 13-15 psi and being on the stock fuel system with only a datalogger, he doesn't want to blow it up. Only issues keeping it from ever being a nice clean car is the previous owner crashed it into a ditch probably spreading manure. Therefor, the front end from the shock towers forward on the passenger side is shifted and tweaked.

Awesome! Who ran this event and whatnot? How did you get signed up for it? There are events around the Twin Cities, but I don't know about them until after they're done, much like this one.

Lacrosse is a bit of a haul. Does look like fun, though. Would love to see some in-car video.

lulz. Does make me want to get an Impreza as a winter beater next year. I thought about doing it this year but this provides another reason.

This Saturday and Sunday in West Salem, WI. It should say in the forums or on that website somewhere the exact location. 35 bucks for 8 runs.

Re: Ice Season!

Wait, you need a roll bar? it doesn't look like anyone in the pictures has a roll bar in their car.

Hey 1quick4, I am really glad you took pictures of the car on the snow bank before I drove it off!

Re: Ice Season!

It depends on what class you race in... the most realistic for a daily driver type car is Rubber to Ice. 123abc, which class were you in?

E. Rubber to Ice Class
This class is to promote an entry level to ice racing that doesn’t require as large a financial commitment as the
other classes. Only the following modifications are allowed. Modifications beyond these rules are not allowed:
1. Cars must be two wheel drive.
2. A four point roll bar is required. It must have one diagonal in the main hoop plane and two rear stays.
Additional bars may be added. Full roll cages are allowed. All roll cages and bars must
be constructed to the design and sizing found in IX.D.1 except all trim components must be retained. Trim
components may be modified but only to the extent necessary to allow installation of the roll
structure.
3. The driver’s seat may be replaced with a racing style seat but must be securely attached and designed for
automotive use.
4. IIRA cars prepared to Stock or Modified may compete in this class as long as the car fully meets all
requirements for the Stock or Modified class (except tire rules).
Page 17 of 23 2010 IIRA Rules and Regulations
5. Wheels are unrestricted in size but the tire/wheel assembly must be covered by the fender when viewed
from above and must not interfere with anything throughout the full range of motion of
suspension and steering.
6. Any unmodified DOT rated tire may be used.

If you race in any other category (wheel to wheel), you're supposed to have a roll cage, and people run studded tires.

Re: Ice Season!

Basically guys there are 6 classes. Awd, fwd, and rwd, and then for each you got studded and non studded. No rollbar required. Just make sure your car is mechanically good and let it rip.

They have helmets you can use as well. So really, the only excuse is not wanting to drive down here.
