Anything that obstructs any part of the view thru the windshield is considered illegal. Even if it's down in the corner. If you have anything hanging from the mirror, it is illegal. Basically you have to have a completely unobstructed view thru your windshield. My advice, put it on the bumper where it's supposed to be or move to another state that doesn't require a front plate.

On a side note, in high school (1991), I got pulled over in my 73 Plymouth Valiant because the cop in St. Cloud thought I had no front plate. It turned out I had so much dust and dirt on it you couldn't see it. Now tell me that an old forest green rusty valiant is a car that catches the eye of an officer as a "fast car".....

As I was pulled over 8 times in 1 month for no front plate. Ya I can tell you most anything you want to know about this.

first off to let you know I drove 1.5 years with out one. And not a single incident. Then out of no where I got 8 in one month.

secondly after getting busted at Opus a police officer gave me the run down on the law for it.

It has to be bolted to your front bump and no where else (ie: it's illegal to put up in your windshield) it also can not be zip tied to the front bumper (which is what I did with mine)

But I can say this for you. I also found a loop hole. Normally this is a fix it ticket. meaning that you fix it and then go to the coart house and show someone, etc. and it's dropped.

Well even if the cop gives you an Official ticket and not a Fix it ticket. Just go to coart wth the plate mounted on your bumper. And play stupid. Be like I was told I had to show someone, etc.

The judge being busy will drop the ticket. 7 out of 8 tickets I got tropped. The first one I didn't know was a fix it ticket so I just paid the fine over the phone.

ps: I still don't run a front plate and I live right across from a police Station and I think for the most part cops will not pull you over for it. But they'll give you a ticket if your doing something else. (ie: pull you over for something else, but then just to compound the fines he'll right that up as well, especially if your down at Red Rock or Opus, or somewhere else where racing is going on)

Front plates are really ugly on DSM's, they did not incorporate them at all into the design of the car. Very ugly on EVO's too....just look tacked on and out of place.

In ND it's the law to have a front plate. The front window mounting won't cut it. The cops in town don't even look at you but the Hi-po's are asses near WIlliston, ND. I'm moving to FL where ther is no front plate law.

Think about this: Imagine how much money the state would save just issuing people 1 plate for the rear of their car? Now that's astronomical! Well, the boys in the state pen wouldn't have enough to do if they did that.

Think how much money they'd lose not being able to issue no front plate tickets

If they only issued one plate, they would only charge you $3.50 instead of the $7. They would miss out on that extra plate fee.

Just so you know, every 7 years (I believe) you have to get new plates. It is automatic and you will see an extra charge for it. So the state would not save money, but lose money, if they only issued one plate to each person.

Front plates are hideous! Whether ur front is made for them or not...looks just terrible, period. I've had mine off for two years, in the bottom/middle of windshield and only been told to fix it once. It's kind of a luck of the draw type thing, my day will come and after it does, the plate will come right off again. Did I mention its UGLY???

I have never heard of it getting changed. I doubt the cops with their laser radar would let that get changed. That is their main target.

The info I quoted was from the 2003 legislative books. There has been no revision to that law since 1997.
