E-brake Question

Car: 1990 Eagle Talon TSi AWD Stock.

The E-brake has been out of commision since I bought the car. Basically what happens is when you engage it, the rear drivers side caliper siezes up and you have to take the whole wheel off to fix it.

My question[s] are:
1. Why does it do this?
2. How do I permanently fix it so I can use my e-brake again?

Re: E-brake Question

The rear calipers on 1G's are notorious for locking up. They rust and bind, mostly from lack of use of the e-brake. You can try taking it off and working it back and forth with some WD-40, or pony up for a new caliper, which is probably the better idea if you've got the scratch.

Re: E-brake Question

Yea rebuilt my rear calipers twice in 4 years because they kept seizing... I just ended up not using the ebrake much at all. Just parked in gear all the time.

Options:

Rebuild them and hope they dont seize again or buy a new or refurbished unit.

Re: E-brake Question

Best option: Buy a reman'ed rear caliper. Autozone sells a pair of rear calipers with pads for $80.

Re: E-brake Question

the e-brake cable from the dealer shouldn't be too bad...i think i got one a while back for $90. you gotta get the correct side too if i'm not mistaken. rust is also a pain if you snap some bolts.

later.
