1st gear help

I have a feeling that my syncro (sp?) for my first gear is shot, because it isn't slowing the gear down when I put it in gear, it will actually grind unless i shift into second and then back into first. So at stop lights I have to put the clutch in, put it into second gear and then back into first before I can go, gets a little annoying after a while...

It also will grind, or what seems to be a grind going from first into second after the car has been sitting turned off for a while. But after that intial "grind" it makes going into second from first, it won't happen again until I turn my car off and drive it again a few hours later.

Thanks for any help in advanced!

Do you have some decent/newer fluid in there? It may be time for a dose of Redline.

You will just be prolonging the problem.

Not necessarily, the fluid may just be THAT bad. Otherwise, even if you get another summer's use out of the tranny with $24 in fluid its worth it, especially considering many DSM's as a whole don't make it that long!

That is what I figured. Tranny has 98k on it. I don't really want to just bring this in and have it rebuilt thought, I'd rather be able to do it my self.

Problem is, I am still in the learning proccess and would need to find someone who one knows what they are doing, and two would want to actually help me.

Thanks, I'll probably do this for the time being, until I have the funds to start on rebuilding it.

royal purple 75 / 90 I think is the GL4 fluid you'd need. I'd recommend this over redline from my experiences. Redline works great with new trannies, but for some reason royal purple seems to "restore life" to older trannies a little more effectively than redline. That's just my .02

Re: 1st gear help

you might want to check the clutch out a bit too, just check that it is properly disengaging. If you have any questions on the rebuild let me know when you get there
