Autos are the hot setup on 1Gs now. A bunch of people have run 10s lately with higher stall torque convertors and stock to near stock auto trannies. One of the guys even made some paddle shifters for his. 1.4 60's are common for the auto guys running fast.

That's my plan with the other talon. 3200 stall ipt tq converter, end clutches and their reworked valve body. This should really wake up the t28 that I put on earlier this year. You can see the engine making boost but it doesn't get to the wheels.

Are any of the fast FWD guys running autos?
I've always loved autos for drag racing. No missed shifts and dead on consistancy, not to mention faster shifts and less gears to row through.

If you can take the tranny out if your car, you can install a shift kit. There is really nothing complicated. If you want to make a much better difference, install different clutch packs. Get more plates, with a thinner diameter. The more clutch plates / steel plates you use, the quicker the impact of the shift.
Automatic trannies are simple. If you have a grasp of hydraulics and can identify the parts inside an AT tranny, you can do anything with them. The planetary design can simply just hold more power than the weaker setup of an MT. Instead of having 2-3 teeth holding gears together, you have entire gears driving / being driven by other gears. Just makes more sense.
However, for street driving, I hate AT trannies. Boring, gay and STUPID problems come up. Diagnostics on an MT are a little easier than an AT unless you understand the active parts in an AT. Power cycle.
Bernie, you are clearly right on if you want to make your car as fast as you can while still reliable. AT all the way old man

You just have to be smarter than the transmission. Ask KC how dumb his 5-speed is. That TOB was squealing it's butt off last night. After some wrestling and another TOB, all was quiet again. We'll see how boring it gets when we launch with full boost and a bottle.

I still see a BJ's headed 2.4, GT35R, auto w/4k converter and spray in my future. Just gotta wait for the right deals to come along.
Beyond all that, I'm just tired of shifting. My King Ranch has spoiled me.

Yes I have learned a lot, but if I keep missing school like I have the last couple weeks, it will be a short term learning streak for me. I already hate school with a passion. I hate the fact that it costs me money, otherwise I wouldn't mind it. But you have to spend money to make money right?

Does the AEM EMS allow for shift control of the auto, or does some other tcu have to be there also?

AEM = no auto controller. Your choices are TCU, one of the controllers from IPT or you can go the homemade relay route for a manually operated setup. The relay setup will have max line pressure constantly so you wouldn't want to drive it on the street much. I doubt your front pump would love you anymore.

My front pump loves me just the same since I'm still running my TRE "race-prepped" 5-speed.  I was just curious in case I ever get a "wild hair" to throw a 4500rpm stall auto into my car.

I run an auto DSM, and I have the IPT stall converter. It works out pretty nice. I finally figured out how to launch better with it, and it doesnt work too bad. Auto's are nice especially in stop and go traffic. I am considering doing a manual swap though.
