Yes we will more then likely be the ones working on aiding them. A typhoon hit the Phillipines a few weeks ago doing major damage. We've been keeping the airport open much longer then normal because of all the flights. With this now, we'll be prolly open around the clock because of all the flights going to help them. I won't actually go there, I will just be at work a lot longer because of long airport hours.

Re: 22000 Dead.

The latest toll is up to 52,000. It is crazy to think that the waves could still be that powerful that far away. I have to do some more reading up on it, that is just mind boggling!

Re: 22000 Dead.

As for the comments on the asteroids etc. Trust me on this, if you worry about dying, your not living. That said, enjoy life and make every moment count.

My mom called this morning and was telling me about one of the people at a hotel on one of the effected coast lines. He looked out into the bay and saw the water suck back for almost a Km and realized what was about to happen, ran inside warned everyone and they went into the upper floors (highrise). No one was injured in that situation. The hotel was designed with a system of breezeways in the lower floors that allowed the water to pass through with much less destruction. Another guy on a bridge noticed the tide sucking back as well and said there were boats on the floor of the ocean then when the wave came, they were of course proplled into the shoreline. It is power that is hard to even believe.

Re: 22000 Dead.

I watched some video's on MSN of the water coming in. It was kind of hard to tell how high the wave was from it. I can't imagine what it looks like to see the water going back and then just come rushing in. I will have to do some more research as well.

I just read on MSN News that the death toll is now up to 63,000, and I'm sure there are still many more unaccounted for.

Re: 22000 Dead.

Bored reading and found some stuff on Tsunamis

Apparently there is a major volcano located somewhere south and east of the US in the Atlantic. When volcanos erupt, the walls collapse, causing a land slide. Well a land slide would displace a great amount of water, thus causing a Tsunami.

Computer calculations and models show that if this volcano erupts, (eruptions in 1700's, and most recently in the 1940's and 70's, nothing major) and a major seismic event were to occur, a wave, known as a Super Tsunami would form, and gain speed, like the crack of a whip. When it reached Washington DC and NYC, the wave would be approx. 300feet plus in height, and be traveling at over 700mph. That would relocate the coast somewhere close to Eastern Tennessee, Western North Carolina.

Although the deaths are tragic, the push to do more will hopefully ensure that these lives weren't lost in vain. Sounds like the US gov't will hold talks on Seismic equipment and Global early warning systems to detect such a cataclysmic event.

Just a little blurb...

happy reading.

Re: 22000 Dead.

I actually watched a show about Super Tsunami's on Discovery or something. It's pretty scary to think that it can actually occur.

The death toll this morning is now over 77,000 and the Red Cross is saying that it could top 100,000.

Re: 22000 Dead.

Then you have to account for disease like Cholera (I think there is another H in that word), and the local economies and food markets...

I hate to be a negative ass, but I wouldn't be suprised to see the overall outcome of this to top 150,000.

That would be like a Nuclear event erasing the city of Bloomington...

Matt D's video will make your stomach turn...

People die in his videos, just to warn you... But it is a "breathtaking" sight... Not a good "breathtaking" either...

Re: 22000 Dead.

I was doing a little more reading. There was a guy that said the water pulled way back from the shore and left fish flopping on the sand. People ran out to get the fish because they don't have much food, then the wave came back in and washed them all away. It still seems surreal. It is definately a huge tragedy. With the threat of disease and all the dead still unaccounted for, I hope the total stops at 150,000. It could easily get much worse with all of the dead bodies contaminating the water supply.

Not so much that you see them die, but you see people get swept away and they're gone. Imagine a levee breaking from a flooded river and water rushing in with unstoppable force... That's what it looks like.

Re: 22000 Dead.

One thing that I didn't think of before, what the hell happened to all of the boats that were over there?? I am sure there were ships in that area full of products.

The ones that were near shore were most likely beached. Anything in the water at the time probably felt a few 10 foot waves and then nothing.

Re: 22000 Dead.

I was just watching CNN and one of the things that hit me was a video they showed of a neighborhood in shambles and all the dogs that survived that were waiting at the houses for the owners to come home. They all looked extremely sad and it just for some reason effected me a lot. The mass graves and makeshift morgues are so intense that it doesn't seem real at all.

Re: 22000 Dead.

My boss told me a story that she saw on the news of a couple that were out in the ocean a ways when the tsunami hit, and they did get much of it since it's worse at the coastline. But then when the wave came back out it was carrying all these people that were screaming and yelling for help. So they went around and picked up about 20 people, and then took a side boat (whatever it's called, maybe a lifeboat) and picked up about another 10-15 children. The couple said there where others out on boats, but they did nothing. That's was just amazing. I guess supposdly the people in the other boats weren't sure what happened and they were scared to pick up anybody. How could anyone just watch all those people screaming for help and not do a thing? It's stories like that, that make me mad.
