Re: 22000 Dead.
Holy shit!
CRAIG |
Re: 22000 Dead.
I am speechless, that is sad.
|
Re: 22000 Dead.
It's been estimated that the water rose 20 feet in minutes, washing at least a half mile inland, then it receeded as fast as it came.
|
Re: 22000 Dead.
That's just fucking insane the more I read about what happened. No way to get away from it.
|
Re: 22000 Dead.
i was watching tv at 4 a.m. this morning and i was speachless. hearing the raw facts about it being the most powerful earthquake in 40 years, 30 ft waves moving 500 m.p.h., and thousands missing made it seem surreal.

Re: 22000 Dead.
Wow thats sad.

Re: 22000 Dead.
That's scary and so sad. :( I was just watching Headline News, and they said there's no warning system in place because catastrophes like this only happen about once every 700 years in that area, but if they would have one in place like they do in the pacific it would have saved hundreds/thousands.

Re: 22000 Dead.
No one on here is stationed near there, are they?
|
Re: 22000 Dead.
As far as I know, Brandon would be the closest. Maybe he'll give us an update on what's going on.

Re: 22000 Dead.
over 23000 and counting dead now and I read this quote :
"The death toll rose almost hourly Monday, a day after the 9.0-magnitude quake struck deep beneath the Indian Ocean off the coast of Indonesia and unleashed towering waves that sped away from the epicenter at over 500 mph before crashing into the region’s shorelines." Just un fucking real. MSN has some video of the aftermath. |
Re: 22000 Dead.
Thats a bunch of BS about the tsunami warning system. The governments knew about the earthquake hours before the waves hit, they should've put out a warning.Tidal wave are inevitable when earthquakes happen in oceans, even small quakes can make some large tidal waves, and this quake was a 9.0.

Re: 22000 Dead.
Fucking rediculous, 12000 people dead in Sri Lanka alone, and its an easy 1000 miles(2+ hours) from the epicenter.
|
Re: 22000 Dead.
Ya that's crazy. No I wansn't affected by this at all. The morning it happened I had people IMing me asking if I felt it, but I didn't feel a thing, heck I didn't even know about it. You all probably know more then me because I only have 1 TV channel here, no cable, nothing.

Re: 22000 Dead.
waves moving at 500 mph...thats just unbelievably crazy. Its worst than getting hit bt a speeding car.
They had Bill Nye talking about the earthquake this morning and I just stood there and listened. Its so crazy how it works how it did. |
Re: 22000 Dead.
They say the death toll is now up to 44,000 and still thousands of people missing. :(
Brandon, I wasn't sure if anyone from your area would be sent to help with the cleanup, etc. They said they were sending American troops over to see what could be done. |
Re: 22000 Dead.
i was in fargo and their paper said something about the quake messing up the earth's rotation or something. or just changing it somehow.
anyone see anything about that? it seems redonkulous that it could really have any major effect on the planet as a whole. btw, on the whole earth topic, there's an asteroid that might hit us in 24 years. |
Re: 22000 Dead.
That is just absolutely mind boggling.
One of my coworkers was born in India, and most of his family is still over there. They live in the southern part by the point, but more inland so they weren't effected by it as much. |
Re: 22000 Dead.
The earths rotation was affected very little by the wave. It's like when you're carrying a big bucket of water, and the water is sloshing around inside of the bucket.
As for the 500mph water... Your insides would be instant mush. They say hitting water flat on is like hitting concrete for a good distance at a good speed when falling, I can't imagine... At least for a good portion of the people, the death was quick. With the floods, I sure hope that most of the people didn't drown. I would hate to drown. I sure hope gov'ts are doing something to prevent this from ever happening again. |
