My understanding is that the exhaust mani would have to come off but that's it. The X turbo bolts to the back side of the motor so that can all stay in place. I guess I should double-check that.
I'm guessing once the stock mani is off the car that re-pulling the tubular later will be cake by comparison since the nuts won't be as bad. At least that was my experience with the downpipe.
I'll get Shane's opinion on it.

Re: Evo X upgrades
Shane got back to me with an estimate on my build and it'll be quite a bit cheaper to do it in one shot, due to rework. The price is affordable, so I'm totally stoked!
I'm going to do at least a partial install of the fuel system early next week. If I don't get it all the way in then I'll know exactly what needs to be done and I'll have DB finish the job.

Re: Evo X upgrades
I knew it would be a bit cheaper to do in one shot. If the turbo setup is actually on the back side of the motor, I am sure it will save a lot of time.

Re: Evo X upgrades
I did some prep work on the car tonight--took out the back seat and front strut bar. I might be daring and try the fuel rail and filter in the parking ramp. The security guard has seen me under the hood a couple times and hasn't said anything. I wonder when that shoe will fall...
I decided to pull out the stock airbox and install the AMS intake. I screwed that up by overtightening the hose clamp around the filter and bending the aluminum pipe. I'll have to swing by Home Depot tomorrow to see if they have some kind of tool that'll push from the inside of the pipe and get it closer to round.

I did enough that it appears to be sealing. It just sucks to spend 3 bills on an intake and then scratch the piss out of it bending it back into shape. The good news is that it'll be covered by a filter anyway.

bummer
I know how you feel. I was scared last week when I switched out all my clamps on my IC piping to T-bolts and didn't want to overtighten them and bend the piping. I have seen a few threads of people bending their pipes so I didn't tighten them down super tight. And strangely on the way to MAP...bam UICP popped off, lol.

My problem is that I tightened them using a screwdriver and I had the connection at the turbo pop off while I was working on the other end. That wouldn't do, so I took a 1/4" ratchet and gave each one a couple turns, which of course was too much. A fine line, for sure.

Re: Evo X upgrades
With practice, you'll figure out what just the right amount of torque is on those little clamps to get them to seal but not leak. Or, if you have SS pipes (a lot of people do), you break the clamp trying to over-tighten it. Don't sweat it too much, happens to all of us.

Lesson learned, the intake doesn't see any pressure so it doesn't need to be super tight, it just can't fall off. If you can wiggle it by hand and it stays together then it's good enough.

Good point. It looks great in the engine bay compared to stock--created all kinds of room for my catch cans, etc. I will have to get use to the sound, though!

Don't go crazy boosting the car with that AMS intake on it. They usually lean the Evo X out a lot.

If it leans the car out "a lot", I would've hated to see my car with stock intake on your dyno, lol.
I was still below 10's with the AMS intake.

Yeah, I'll be short shifting from here on out. I tried to keep it below 3500rpm on the way to work.
Going to attempt a fuel rail install tonight and see if I can find a way to run a power cable from the pump to the engine compartment. Have to figure out how to pull up those trim pieces this afternoon.
I'm still waiting on a few pieces: vacuum fittings for the distribution block, a couple of those 'add a circuit' taps, and the rod bearings. I think I'll have to create a mounting plate for some of these electronics under the hood. I want to put that where the fuel filter is right now, which is why I want to swap out that and the rail tonight.

Re: Evo X upgrades
Did you do the fuel pump relay swap already, or does the double pumper bypass that?
