Re: Little. Blue. Different.

All done! Hughes came over this morning and we put the new blue hotness in. We had everything buttoned up and car started around 10:30am, then proceeded to putz with (gah I hate turbo swaps!) oil leaks. I had everything as it was with the previous turbo, same lines and everything, just oil was dumping *everywhere* out the bottom. After a trip to denny's I realized that I had taken out the stock o2 housing support bracket (it was in teh way of the o2/downpipe but just rubbed before) and one of the bolt holes led to an oil galley near the balance shaft.....DOH! Soon after that, I discovered that oil was leaking past one of the bolts for the oil drain/oilpan connection, so I begrudgingly yanked it, put a little rtv on the threads and back smooth section, and put it back in...making a mess in the process :P This solved all the oil leaks. During what we shall call 'leak testing' I had discovered that this turbo is everything its sold as. A direct bolt-on, stock-spooling, big-power-gains-up-top assembly of goodness.

I've been having issues with my alky kit lately and just on pump gas, torque in the midrange is up slightly, but power up top is just heavenly. Before I'd look for 6000rpms and then time it just after that to shift around 7k...now I'm hitting 7500+ and slamming in the clutch because its coming much quicker than I expect it. After we got the oil leaks figured out and we did some quick STi p0wn4ge, he kept saying, 'timing....timing.....more timing!' So we did just that. Added a degree across the board and leaned out the tune just a tad. Still zero knock and the car just puuuuuuuullls up top.

Now, big turbo guys, stop laughing. This thing is tiny, yes, it's probably not making 700whp...but on pump gas, I'm hitting full boost right around 3000rpms, and power pulls steadily to 8000. I don't want to make whp guesses right now, but I will say it feels up top as good or better than my alky tune before, which was about 360whp on DB's dyno dynamics.

Me likey.

The plot thickens though. A few weeks back I thought air was leaking past the seals in the turbo (the ix turbo I just took off) when I did a boost leak test. Today on the bench we hooked up a compressor and sealed off the comp outlet with the palm of my hand, and it not only holds boost, it doesn't leak air past the bearings. So it appears I had a healthy IX turbo....311, get on AIM, you and I need to talk. If anyone is interested in this turbo (the IX one), please pm me and we'll work out a deal.

All back together:

Re: Little. Blue. Different.

OMG, that turbo sounds heavenly. I love the fact it pulls to 8k, i wish i would of called you a bit ago when I was out, i would love a ride in what sounds like the perfect 16G.

Good luck with the rest of the tuning stuff.

The car feels great, at about 6k RPM you really start to notice its not a stock turbo in there!

Awesome! I'm glad you like it! Sounds like it'll be a real monster when you get your alky kit working properly again, or if you decide to go E85 again.

Re: Little. Blue. Different.

This thing holds boost awesome. Boost taper is really an issue with the stock turbo, a 24psi spike would end up at 19psi or less on a MBC. Using a GM BCS holds boost much better up top, but not like this thing. I've logged 24psi @ 7800rpms on a 3rd gear pull, that just wasn't possible before.

This is true! Your car does dang good on a MBC....I just remember Jim's car and others tapering to like 17....even with a big spike it seems to fall fall fall. Your car likes timing more than boost though, so it works!

Re: Little. Blue. Different.

Here's a graph I made a few days ago showing how this turbo holds boost way up top. This is a *rough* tune, so its a little choppy and has a few low spots. This is a basic 3rd gear pull...sometimes on my IX turbo I could hold boost pretty good up top in 4th gear, but not like this thing! I've logged 24.7psi @7800rpm.

The spool area is a little lacking, I switched some settings in my bcs stuff that cuts down max upward correction based on TPS, and the net result is less WGDC during spool-up. I'm trying to figure out a way around it, as it induces a bit of lag, yet the turbo flows more than the stocker so while driving it, you really don't notice.

============

More info, just a general update:

I've put about 300 miles on the car (it is my daily driver) since putting the turbo in, and after getting boost dialed in, I have been having nothing but fun with it. It's natural to want to shift as power peaks and falls off. On the stock turbo it happens around 6000 and then shift at 7000. With the BBK, 7800rpms is there before you notice and its time to shift! I have GSC Beehive springs w/ kelford 272 cams and have an 8300rpm rev limit, but I try and shift before 8k to keep the bottom end happy for a long time to come.

Cruising and part throttle, the car actually feels more responsive than the stock turbo. I'm sure part of this is tuning, but the car def feels more torquey under daily non-WOT driving. At 70mph on the freeway, top gear, I can step on it and roll back the throttle a bit and get plenty of passing momentum, it is just so close to the stock turbo it is amazing.

Lastly, the week before I installed the BBK I had been taking care of my brother's dog, Mack. Mack is a pointer/lab mix and 80 pounds or so of spaz-tastic energy bursts. I strained my shoulder/neck a little in the mix of things, and then doing a turbo install, my neck was less than happy but I wasn't really in pain. Well, the BBK did NOT help things, my neck felt WAY worse monday and tuesday....ironically i was doing pull after pull after pull doing street tuning Weds was bad and today I've been taking it easy and it finally is starting to feel better. So yea, hang on tight, cause this turbo means business!

Re: Little. Blue. Different.

This turbo sounds great. It also sounds like you are nothing but happy with it.
The bottom end should be fine with a good tune.
You got a rocking setup.

Re: Little. Blue. Different.

I just want to say, stock turbo'd evos are SO MUCH FUN, and that's what makes this thing such a blast. 16g's are still my favorite, but its freaking awesome that there's products like this on the market. Now, if it lasts another 65k miles like the stocker did, I'll be extra happy!
