Re: Anyone know of..
Just curious as I see it all too often in terms of people who are "best friends" signing leases together and then end up hate living with each other.

Yah well basically we work different scheduals. I work days at Dominos and he works late nights at Shooters Billiards. But I understand where you are coming from. Maybe a shorter lease should be signed to start out with just to test the water out. Then we will see from there. Thanks for bringing that to my attention, I wouldn't have thought of it otherwise!

Re: Anyone know of..
Your not going to find hardly anywhere that has a month to month agreement. The best you can hope for is a 6 month lease. And even then most places run a credit check on both applicants to ensure that they are not getting some deadbeat with bad credit.
Also almost all places require check stubs from the last 6 months of employment. General rule of thumb is you have to gross (before taxes) per month three times what your rent would be to qualify. So lets say your rent was $800 split two ways its $400 each, you would have to gross (before taxes) $1200 per month before you would qualify.
The renting market is getting a lot more strict due to the fact that people just move out in the middle of the night and stiff landlords on rent and such. You have to basically consider yourself applying for a loan when you rent/least a place to live. Because in the end if you flake out, then you still owe the remainder of the lease. If it goes unpaid, then leans and other legal acting can and will be taken.
So make sure you have your ducks in a row before going and looking at places because there is a lot more that goes into renting that people think. Unless you have a friend that owns the property and are renting under the table of course. Thats the best way to go if you can find it.

Re: Anyone know of..
Craig is dead on.
The only way for lenient(sp) credit checks is to look near a college capus or have a parent co-sign. The parent thing doesnt really look like an option so I would think you would need to look near campus.
Stay away from places like roommates.com. My ex tried that in Roseville and ended up living with a meth dealer for a month. The person put on a smile and cleaned up before she came to see the place. You would have never thought her roommate ever even smoked a cigarette when they met. She was lucky and never signed a lease so she just packed up and moved out one day.
I would also look at the ads in the newspaper for care givers. I know that down here in Mankato that old ladies will rent out their basement for close to free to have a person live with them and help them with meals or daily activities. It would be worth looking into.
Good luck.

Re: Anyone know of..
Dad said he'd co-sign. I've looked into a lot of this, and talked to a few people and apartment people. As long as I have someone to co-sign they will do it. I'm not looking for anything extravigant.

Re: Anyone know of..
Even if you have a co-applicant you still have to gross three times your half of the rent. Unless you have somebody that will get the apartment in their name if you don't meet this criteria in most cases you will be shit out of luck. My parents own 12 apartment complexes and houses that they rent and this is usually a standard unless you can find something a little more "under the table".
Good luck.

Re: Anyone know of..
Either way it will work out. Me going home is not an option. Whether I live with someone who I already know, or my dad gets my apartment under his name, I'm not going home because I can't and don't want to. I don't think anyone is just going to leave me homeless. And I don't know about the whole income being three times my half the rent. Poor people get places, not even on welfare. There's possibilities. I'll find them.

Re: Anyone know of..
Besides most places I've looked at tell you from the get-go what their income requirements are. And I know plenty of people who can't triple their rent and still have a place to live.
Thanks for the advice everyone. I plan on setting up an account over at Wells Fargo or some place and working on my credit. I'm a little nervous but better sooner than later I suppose?

You are right, the sooner the better! I do suggest USBank over Wells Fargo though, they offer better packages for students and young adults.

Re: Anyone know of..
Then there is also the cold hard fact, "Do you make enough to pay the rent and all of the bills that are associated with it?"
At my place we pay:
$1656 Rent
$40 Gas
$78 Cable and internet and phone
$80+ power
$28 Garbage
$~40-70 Water and sewage.
Then there is my personal expenses:
$380 Car payment
$80 Cell phone
And you still need money left over for food and gas money.
It adds up fast. Just make sure you think about all of the expenses you have write them all down on paper, ask your friends what they pay for gas, electric and cable, and then add your half of the rent and any other expenses you have, if you dont make at least double that per month, i would say start looking for a new job because you will not like the way you will be living. Ramin every night gets to be pretty gross. Believe me because i have been there.

Re: Anyone know of..
Tripling your rent with gross pay isn't all that much per month. Like I said before, lets say your rent is $800 per month. You split that two ways you get $400 each. That means you need to gross atleast $1200 per month. Gross is before taxes. And if you don't gross atleast $300 per week your going to have trouble affording to live anywhere comfortably.
Full time at minimum wage you would make $246 per week since the minimum wage in Minnesota is $6.15 per hour for larger buisnesses. For smaller buisnesses minimum wage is $5.15 per hour which is $206 per week.
With the economy the way it is I don't know how anybody can even afford to live in the Twin Cities area unless you are making atleast $10.00 per hour. I know people that make far less make it by. But usually they are on some sort of public assistance, and the tax payers are the ones supporting them. Just because you are not on welfare doesn't mean they are pulling all their own weight. There are tons of programs out there for people that cannot make ends meet.
Either way, those rules are usually in effect for your well being anyway. The rules are there so people don't get in over their heads when renting. Its a good rule of thumb to go by even if the establishment in question doesn't require it. There are a lot of expenses that you can plan for and there are a lot you can't, you don't want to leave yourself dependant on a certain budget because things always come up.
