TRE - Taller 5th Gear
Wondering if anyone has any experience with the TRE taller 5th gear. Readin' a little about the TRE Exchange and a taller 5th gear is an option. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am mainly wondering on gas mpg and driving down the highway without going 3000rpm at 55-60mph.

Re: TRE - Taller 5th Gear
Yeah, it'd help with that. It'll be kinda doggy at lower rpm though. Cars with lots of torque usually have really tall overdrives like the Viper and Corvette. The Viper is at 1200 rpm at 60 mph in 6th gear.

I believe 95talonracer was having one put in (hope I remember that right). You might ask him if he's running it yet.

Re: TRE - Taller 5th Gear
well, for whatever reason talonracer95 was banned, and hasnt been allowed back on even since his ban was up. He did get that TRE 5th installed, and has the TRE tranny on the car.

Re: TRE - Taller 5th Gear
Wouldnt a taller 5th gear be bad for drag?

Re: TRE - Taller 5th Gear
You really don't ever go into 5th gear when drag racing a DSM. Even the very fast guys don't have to with the help of high revlimiters and larger diameter tires. The stock 5th gear is perfect for acceleration though, if you are do have to go into it on high mph highway pulls. Some cars when you go into 5th, it more of a cruising/gas mileage gear and the car falls out of the spooled up turbo powerband. A long 5th gear would probably be useful for a Bonneville salt flat car and for better gas mileage/less noise on the highway.

Would a taller gear affect the gearing in our rear pumpkin on a AWD?

Re: TRE - Taller 5th Gear
Alright, thanks guys. I wont be going with a taller 5th. Just wondering because I was wondering if it was any better on the car (highway speeds/mpg).

No. This only changes 5th gear, not the front diff/rear diff ratios.

Re: TRE - Taller 5th Gear
I might do it at some point. The engine is just spinning too fast at 80+mph. It's wasteful when the engine is torquey enough to do it at slower revs.

Re: TRE - Taller 5th Gear
Hey I did get the taller 5th gear and I would suggest it to anyone. They say the estimate gas mileage is like 30MPG. It cuts the rpm down in 5th gear so it wont rev as high in 5th either. Let me know what you choose to do.

Re: TRE - Taller 5th Gear
I decided against getting a taller 5th. Went ahead and ordered the Stage 2 Exchange though. My Dodge Intrepid is going to real shit so I went ahead and bought a trans from TRE.
I called the local shop and they want 360$ for R&R on my trans. That's with telling them I already pulled the battery/box and intake and all the stuff thats in the way out. All they have to do is remove axles and DS and drop it. Is that too much for R&R? Should I keep looking?

Re: TRE - Taller 5th Gear
Bring your car to one of the local sponsor shops (one has much lower labor rates than pretty much any place in the Cities) and I'm sure they can do your tranny removal/installation for a decent price.
The taller 5th gear is a great idea, it'll improve MPG and save wear and tear on your engine.

I live no where near the TC area brother. I live in the boonies, 1 mile from SD border. I would love to bring it into a Sponsor shop but I can't truck it down. I was just hoping to get an estimate of what someone else has had theirs done for. They wanted 360$ for the R&R. I gotta save my money. I'm trying to build a reliable DSM..

How much are they doing for you. Are they just pulling the tranny ad doing the work, or are they reinstalling it to.
If they just do the pull off and rebuild that is about 3 hours. If they put it all back together it is more like 5 or 6.

Re: TRE - Taller 5th Gear
They're just pulling the old one out, putting the new one in along with a clutch and flywheel, I'm supplying the New trans and the fluids.
I did alot of the work myself, disconnected all the hoses, wires, sensors, everything but the axles and the DS. Thats where I got stuck and confused and I do not have the tools to do it. I gave up.
I dont know..

Most shops don't want to work on a car that someone already started working on and aren't going to offer a discount when a car comes in half torn apart.

We don't like doing it either. It becomes the "who is responsible for what" argument.
