extrude honing stock intake manifold
Didn't know where exactly to post this, but I am wondering if anyone has any input on doing an extrude hone on a stock 1g intake manifold. I know those crazy 16g guys at english racing, DONT use a SMIM, they did extrude hone on a stock manifold (it seems to be doing pretty well on their car).
I guess what I'm asking, is it it worth it? Planning on doing a mild port on my head, and depending on what I find, maybe some oversized valves.
My setup SHOULD be like this-
2g piston/1g rod combo 2.0l
evo3 16g, ported, prob around 26-28psi
e85 (1450-1600cc injectors)
link
272 cams of some sort (prob hks)
light port work on the head, oversized valves, aftermarket springs and retainers
external wastegate
Fmic of some sort
N/A tb
2g manifold heavily ported (possibly an fp race manifold, again, its dependent on what I find)
4 inch exhaust (I realize its overkill, but dont care, going for sound on that one)
That's the jist of it, I obviously didnt cover the entire mod list. Also, if you know of a place that can do extrude honing, that would be helpful
Thanks in advance,
Dan.

Re: extrude honing stock intake manifold
I remember reading about it on another forum about it being very expensive and not getting much gain from it. Also you can get away with much smaller injectors. I maxed out my 16g (30+psi) with fic 950's at like 45% duty cycle.

Re: extrude honing stock intake manifold
I'm getting big injectors, so I never have to upgrade. Eventually would like to run a borg warner s259 or a fp3065, so planning ahead.
That's a little disheartening about the gains not being good, I'd only do it if I can find somewhere cheap to do it.

Re: extrude honing stock intake manifold
i would say its not worth the money at all, x2 on injectors not needing to be that big, but if you plan on going bigger eventually then thats cool. i would get a 2g head and an fp mani also.

Re: extrude honing stock intake manifold
Waste of money. My buddy had it done to his supercharged SVT contour, and barely saw any gains. For the money, just find a used Magnus or another aftermarket IM.

It works well on other applications, just not ours.

Umm, the CSVT all ready came from the factor with an exude honed intake manifold, this was one of the many differences between it and a standard 2.5 Contour. Correct me if I am wrong, but once the manifold was allready honed, there would be little to no gains by repeating the process?

Re: extrude honing stock intake manifold
^^I would imagine.
SO, I'll prob stray away from this. I wasn't looking to buy a SMIM, just cause it seems overkill for a 16g, but if the right deal comes along, I'll prob end up with one.
Thanks for all the input guys!

Re: extrude honing stock intake manifold
You could talk to Bob @ MAP about porting the manifold a bit, he does some great work to the Evo manifolds.

He has a Tarus 3.0 block with Escape 3.0 heads, IIRC he used the lower manifold off the Escape and the regular 2.5 CSVT upper. He had the lower extrude honed and ported and extrude honed the upper too. He gained a few lb/ft of torque, but for the money he paid he said he just should have spent it elsewhere.
Since you're going to be spending a lot of money on the car you might as well just get an aftermarket. Then you never have to worry about upgrading again. Just my .02 cents.

Re: extrude honing stock intake manifold
You could use a 2g head and an evo3 intake manifold. That would be a perfect combo for an evo3 16g.

^^that's not a bad idea. I have a spare 2g head, it will prob find it's way on to my car.

Re: extrude honing stock intake manifold
Yeah that would be a perfect combo. You could also get some evo3 cams too.

Re: extrude honing stock intake manifold
Is everyone jumping on the 2g head bandwagon now?
I am kind of surprised... But you do have the higher compression pistions.
That should be a good combo. 8.5 compression, 272hks cams with 2g head E16G FTW!

Re: extrude honing stock intake manifold
2g head is right up there with Auto swaps and such.
