crazy studdering while Reving
My buddy just went to do a stupid tune up on the car. Replaced filters, changed oil, did some free mods.. everything was working fine. A couple days later, he decided to swap plugs and wires because he broke a wire doing a comp test and the plugs looked like they were the stock plugs.
It was running fine for about 10 minutes of driving. Shut it off, came back about 10 minutes later, and bam. At idle it sounds just like a beat.. you could here like a heart beat of exhaust. It was anything but a constant exhaust sound. Then we started moving and noticed it was studdering really bad. It is slower than an N/A dsm I'd think. I really dont know what happened.
He used the correct plugs ( bpr6es or some shit) and some cheap ass wires. Xact or something shitty along those lines. This car is completely stock ( 1g tsi AWD 7 bolt 92)
Any ideas anyone? Its friday, I probably wont get much help heh.

Re: crazy studdering while Reving
Sounds like a plug wire could be loose on either the plug or the coilpack.

Or some shit? There are a lot of plugs that are simular numbers but arent the same thing, if your not paying attention you could get the wrong ones. BP6S BR6ES BPR6ES. Make sure he has the right ones. Cheap wires could be the result. Make sure you have spark in each cylinder, if so then move to fuel. If no luck still check the intercooler piping, you said he replaced a filters? Was the air filter one of them, did he unplug the mas sensor and forget to plug it back in? Might try throwning the old wires back in, see if it helps.

Wow... 92 to have a 7 bolt. Not many of them were made. Interesting to know one is in the Metro area.

Re: crazy studdering while Reving
I would have to say a plug wire came off or is not connected all the way. Check the Mas plug also.

Bullshit, I would bet that either the plugs arent' gapped correctly or they are the wrong plugs. Brand new wires even if they are shitty should deliver enough spark on a stock car. What did he gap the plugs to?

If I remember correctly, the late 92's got the 7 bolts, didn't they? Mine was built in late 92 (93 model year) and had a 7 bolt in it.
Of course we can't forget about Mike's 93 with a 2g 7bolt in it........

Re: crazy studdering while Reving
I am going with Craig. I bet the plugs didn't get gapped and are sitting at .032" gap. If that isn't it, then one of the plug wires probably came off.

Very late, because 7 bolt production dates were 5/92 and up if I remember right. Usually any vehicle with a production date of June or later is the next model year. So there is a small percentage that were 92 model year with the seven bolt.

But would a .032" gap do that? Isn't that what they are supposed to be stock? Shit the guy that owned my car before me had his gapped at .035" so he said he could run 90 octane without any ill effects.... But I never had studdering problems with that gap, for the three months they were that way.

Re: crazy studdering while Reving
Yeah, I got to thinking about that and a big plug gap shouldn't matter at idle. A wire probably fell off. The plug gap matters more under boost.

Re: crazy studdering while Reving
Jake - I have the right plugs, I had it written down when I got there and I didnt have the sheet of paper here alright?
They are gapped to .30.. im aware that .28 is where it should be. Too bad that shouldnt effect anything until under boost! It does this ALL OVER the power band. Its not just at idle , or under boost. Its both.
The wires straight SUCKED. Im going to try and get better / new ones here today. I dont know alot about coil packs but its burnt black on the pack itself and the metal around it. MAybe it got cooked?
Im going to pickup the wires / coil pack right now and re-install to eliminate those.
I will update later once I get a better idea of whats going on.

wrong. .030. Yea .028 would be better, but I should have no ill effects at idle.

Re: crazy studdering while Reving
Actaully, .028 would not be better for a stock car, .031 would be ideal for the most power while at stock boost levels. You should learn to actually use proper grammar and appreicate other's ideas, especially when they know far more about DSM's than you can ever dream of knowing. You're lucky people are even helping you at all. I expect better from someone who's been on the boards for aslong as you have, good day.

Re: crazy studdering while Reving
You aren't seriously crying about my grammer are you? Everything I post is plenty legible for everyone to read. I have not had a complaint about that in a long time. I am not perfect, deal with it. And if you dont want to help, then dont. Usually the things people say on here dont help anyways. There is always that chance that someone chimes in with something that helps. When your working with something as broad as this ( lack of details for you) I can't expect anyone to actually help. I wish I understood what was happening more.
I dont exactly know where that attack came from but it was not needed. As for the brief responses that may come off as "snappy," I'm working on a DSM. Short temper is often the case while working on the car.
.030 is fine for the application. I was saving time just by telling craig that his assumptions were incorrect. I see nothing wrong with what I said.
Im going to swap coil packs and see if that helps at all.

I'm not going for the most power here. I'm trying to make the car STOP STUDDERING. How exactly do you know what I know about DSMs? You don't so dont assume. I've made everything work on every dsm I've owned with mostly verbal or NO help. I think I've paid people to work on my car a couple times and that was electrical.
Especially when everything posted was already things I know and have tried to change / test / fix. So far, nothing new has been established. This is a tech thread, why don't you treat it like one.

I'm just trying to figure out this problem. That's all. It has managed to get off topic a few times already.

Re: crazy studdering while Reving
The time you have spent fucking typing shit in this thread you could have changed every part that could contribute to the car running like shit. We aren't going to be able to fix it for you, get your ass out there are work on it. And as far as my previous post, I didn't read your question carefully, I didn't know it was idling funny. My bad. Once you find out what was the cause of the problems feel free to post, otherwise no more of this bullshit.

Re: crazy studdering while Reving
Why not just use a DVM and check the coils? Wouldn't that be simpler?
