But this is the beauty of a Republic, the individual is protected from the whims of the masses. Freedom of speech is protected for that reason.
OMG REALLY?!?! Do you even know what you are arguing? NO ONE IS GOING TO TELL YOU TO TAKE DOWN YOUR CONFEDERATE FLAG!!!! They are NOT making your flag illegal. :deadhorse:

Can't have your cake and eat it to. Either we have free speech or we don't
Can't regulate away everything somebody dislikes.
I don't see anybody criticizing the Black Panther's flag and what it means,.... How about ISIS,... How about the LGBT flag,... and so on, there will always be somebody not liking it.
The right to free speech is a right of the citizens of the USA. The state government is an entity, not a person. No one is saying you can't display the Confederate flag. The issue is whether the state government should be flying it. In reality, the government should follow the direction of the people. (even though that doesn't always happen) We have reached the point where enough of the people find it offensive, and it should be taken down.
I'll be the first one to agree that the fact that the Confederate flag has reached this kind of symbolism is kind of stupid. But it is what it is. I wish every person in America could go to school and get a great education and be full contributors to society. That would help race relations a lot. But that too, is just too much pie in the sky thinking.

If the states/governments see it as a part of their history in a positive way, not in the way it's been twisted to mean, they should fly it if they so choose. It hurts no one.

and they are choosing to take it down. The federal government is not making them take it down, the people are stating their opinion to take them down.

True. But why? Because of the moral majority or the lunatic fring? I live in the south. It's not flown here to promote slavery, it's just a southern pride thing. And no, I don't fly one

Food for thought: Should the word/term "Dixie" be considered offensive as well since it is often associated with the Stars & Bars? At what point does it stop?

Please explain. People have associated racism and slavery to the Confederate flag, and the Confederate flag is associated with Dixie. This just begs the question, where will it end? What is to be considered an acceptable level of offensiveness?

Sure it is.
George Washington owned slaves, some while he was President. Should we tear down the Washington Monument too?

It won't end, this is just the start,......
