Well I did it...

Bought my first bike. I got a 97 YZF1000. Nice starter bike huh. It has 3260 miles (yes that is correct) and I go it for cheap, cheap, cheap. I am about broke now but I couldn't pass it up. It needs a right fairing and the center cowl (peice by the headlight) is scratched. I am trying to learn on it. It is quite powerfull. I have not gone past 6k at ~40% throttle yet. Bastard has some torque. Claimed 140hp, 110 torque. None of my friends have the balls yet to go WOT in the first 2 gears. We are all newbies to bikes (owned for the past month or so).

Haha... Yeah a 1000 is quite a big starter bike. Did you get training wheels with that?

Re: Well I did it...

Just be careful and don't try to show off. That is where most newbies get in over their head. Some buddy says they want to see a wheelie, so they try and....splat. Also always remember, even if you get into a corner WAY faster than you think you can make it through at, the bike WILL make the corner, you just have to lean it over and pray.

The ol' YZF is really heavy, be careful of that. It is a pretty docile engine though and won't surprise you. If you want some pointers, I will go on a ride with you sometime.

Re: Well I did it...

Thanks, I am not even close to confident on this bike. I am fat so that helps in turning etc but I still slow way down. I am going to get a new helmet and jacket today. I was wearing my car helmet and a leather coat. I do not plan on doing any tricks. That is kind of how I got a good deal on the bike.

The original owner was doing a wheelie with his girl on the back and the bike ran out from under them kicking them both off. He didn't want the bike anymore and it sat for 3 years at 400 miles. A kid at James work bought the bike and replaced the forks and about all of the damage. He needed to unload it quick and was selling it for what he had in it. He had the whole thing torn apart before and I got it with the left fairing off and the piece that goes along the bottom off. I am going to wait and install them when I am pretty confident that I will not go down. He put 2000 odd miles on it.

I am ok at riding, take the turns slow, and am so so as far as the clutch is concerned. Actually I was fine except for one mishap where I killed it 5 times as I was in the wrong gear. The last time I ended up starting in 2nd as I wasn't sure what I was doing. Didn't realize it until I shifted into third. I probly put 30 miles or so on it yesterday.

Thanks for the offer JET, I may take you up on it sometime.

Re: Well I did it...

Nice bike. I just bought my first bike eariler this year, ninja 750R. Kinda sucked bought it in Fargo and first time ever driving a bike, I drove it back to grand forks, what a rush. Don't worry about the killing it thing. I stalled out like 5 times driving out of the driveway from the guy I bought it from. Don't think he believed me when I said I drove one before lol.

Reminds me of the scene from Terminator where he's ripping off his flesh....

I agree with the hashish + morphine use in this situation... cuz at least that way you wouldnt even care if it did hurt... which it wouldn't

Re: Well I did it...

I will probably try to start riding it pretty quick also. We won't be trying any tricks or anything on the bike. We have friends that try things like standing straight up and siting on the tank and stuff though. I know those aren't big tricks or anything, but they have been only riding a month max. 2 of them have new 05 600s and one has a F3. We should probably think about geting permits.

Those are the idiots that raise everyone else's insurance. Morons... At least they aren't trying wheelies yet.

buy a copy of 'A Twist of the Wrist' or 'A Twist of the Wrist 2' by Keith Code and read them over and over and over. Best advice I can give, besides always wearing all your equipment, no matter how hot or wet it is.

Re: Well I did it...

I probably wont be riding it too much so I will be on 4 wheels most of the time. One of my friends likes to do burnouts. I know they are planning on doing wheelies. I just don't think they are good enough to do them yet. They say they can get the front tire off the ground but maybe not very much. I haven't seen.

Re: Well I did it...

They aren't really doing any tricks. Like most 20 yr olds, they talk alot of shit. None of them have the balls to get heavy on the throttle in my bike yet. What scares me the most about my bike is how easy it is to pop a wheely. Apparently this bike will do one in most of the gears (guy with cbr929 told me about all gears). That means if I hit WOT at any time, the front might lift, catch me off guard and go down.

I am just trying to get used to the basics of driving safely. I have only had it one night (last).

Re: Well I did it...

I wouldn't get nearly that worried about it. 1st gear is probably the only gear it would pull a wheelie when you weren't trying to do it. If you keep your body weight in the normal position you will be fine. I doubt your bike will even do a wheelie in 3rd with just throttle, even with trying. The thing that would worry me the most about that bike as a 1st bike is the weight. That was made a few years before they started shaving weight off the 1000's.

Even though we don't always get along the greatest, I would still rather show you some skills versus having you go down. So my offer stands. Erik would probably go with us too. Maybe we should have a DSMStyle ride?
