Passenger window don't work

OK well the other day my passenger window just decided it wouldn't go down. I thought maybe the motor was dead. Today we popped off the door panel. We seen the plug that goes directly to the motor with either 12 or -12V. We unplugged it, hooked up a 12V battery. The motor works. So we connected a multimeter to the other end of the plug to see what Voltages we were getting when we hit the UP/DOWN window switch. We are getting 13.1V when we hit up, which sounds good to me. But when I switch it to DOWN we get like -1V. I'm guessing this is a problem where I'd have to chase wires all the way through the car to fix this. I'm just checking to see if anyone had this happen before or has any good quick checks I can make. Thanks!

Also it does not go down no matter if I use the passenger or driver side switch in case you are wondering.

Re: Passenger window don't work

I would try a “known good” Master Switch, If the master switch is bad, than the circuit may not work on the left or right switch.

Re: Passenger window don't work

From the circuit diagrams I have It looks like the 1G gets power from a relay with the ignition on, than gets the ground from the master switch.

Re: Passenger window don't work

sorry, it's a 91 TSI. By master switch, are you refferring to the driver side switch? This problem actually semi appeared soon as I got home. The passenger side switch wouldn't work unless you kinda pushed on the arm rest where it is located. And then it would only work sometimes. But it always worked when I did it from the driver side. Now it just doesn't work on either of the switches. So are you saying try a known good switch on the driver side and see what happens? Thanks for the help so far.

Re: Passenger window don't work

Yes...a bad master (DS switch) will cause problems with both windows. Even if the passenger switch is fine. Everything goes thru the DS switch first. Find a buddy with a 1g and swap out the switches on both sides (One at a time until you find it). Then you'll know for next time. These cars typically don't have wiring issues unless some redneck cut into something.

There are 2 wires per motor. Switching to another direction reverses the polarity. Also, looking at the circuit shows there is 1 window relay located right above the interior fuse box. But right after the relay the wire splits into 2 individual wires the feed each switch with power.

PS relay feed wires is pin #6 which is a blue with a black stripe. DS is a solid blue wire and pin #5 at master switch. Check any ground connections in the door. Let us know.

Re: Passenger window don't work

Thanks a bunch! I will try to find a new switch. I may just try swapping the pass side switch onto the driver side first and see what happens. I don't really have too many friends here with DSM's anymore, so I may have to go dumpster diving at Jon's junkyard or something!!!

Re: Passenger window don't work

You won't be able to swap the switches, DS switch has a bigger harness. Don't forget to try most Mistu. products produced around that time (Galants, Evos, etc). The switch may look different, but many times it's the same harness and connection.

Re: Passenger window don't work

Just wanted to say thanks to Charlie (TurboDomestics) for giving me that new drivers side power window switch assembly. It fixed the problem!
