Re: Shifting to 2nd grinds.?

What year, turbo, manual?? Autos shift too. I would check your tranny fluid first. Getting low on fluid will make the tranny shift rough. 2nd gear is usually on of the weaker synchos (goes out first) on an AWD dsm. I would check to make sure you have suffiecient tranny fluid. I would then change it (Nobody probly has yet) and see how it is. Is this an all of a sudden problem or is it something which has slowly progressed??? More info please.

Take apart, inspect, and replace worn parts.

Thats what I need to do also. How complicated is it do take the tranny apart and replace some parts? I've never attempted it, so I have no idea how to do it.

Re: Shifting to 2nd grinds.?

You need alot of special tools, pullers for the bearings and gears. I wouldnt attempt it, I did and didnt have the right tools so I ended up giving it to Mitsu and overpaying. If your going to spend over 500 for a rebuild, either by yourself or from someone else, I would have it professionally built by TRE or another shop.

Either live with the grinding, and try some other fluids- synchroshift, redline etc. Or find another tranny in better shape or have 2nd gear synchro replaced- There are more parts that will be worn when you take it all apart, so you wont just be replacing 1 thing.

Re: Shifting to 2nd grinds.?

Oops I am sorry; I feel like a newb now. My car is a 2G AWD with a manual transmission and the problem has slowly progessed, I will try changing the transmission fluid.

Changing the transmission fluid will only be a band-aid. If the transmission has been grinding for awhile it will continue to get worse. Changing the fluid with some good stuff will help but it will need rebuilding soon.

Does it function differently when it warms up? Or does it grind no matter what?

They was one time that my car would not take gear and grind. When I took out the transmission the throw out bearing was shot.In my opinion it sounds like you will for sure be pulling the tranny.

If the car is low on tranny fluid (as it was in my friends GS-t) it will grind and start to drive rough. It is most likely his synchros but I would check the fluid first before pulling the tranny. My friend had to replace his tranny. It was not rebuildable when he finally decided to address the problem. Just my opinion though... I do not like pulling trannies.

Toss a mix of Redline fluids in there and see what happens, if nothing else it will shift nice for another few months to prolong the inevitable rebuild looming in your future.
