The only thing to go out on the water pump are the bearings and seal. If it is leaking from where the shaft is, or if you can wiggle the shaft itself then it's shot.

The easiest way to know if your thermostat is bad is if your car is running cold and never heats up. The thermostat is designed to open up at a certain temp, but when they go bad they will open up too soon or get stuck open so your car will never get to operating temp.

That is true assuming it is a "fail safe" model. I have encountered older thermostats which are not "fail safe" and they will not open when defective. This is never good, when buying a new thermostat from anyone but Mitsu ask if it is a "fail safe" unit, if the clerk gives you the deer in the headlights look(swanny knows what that looks like ) shop somewhere else from now on.

You dumbass, I just posted a similar thread for you.

Thanks for the help. I am guessing he has one of the older thermostats. I will check the water pump for play. There is oil all over it though along with everything else under the timing belt cover. Not sure where it is coming from. Most of it seems to be on the block and down. Maybe a bad HG or something. We will probly replace that now also.
