new install of windows 7, should I partition my HD?

ok originally this laptop had windows vista and a 250gb HD that was partitioned into 70gb for the C: drive and the rest for the E: drive.

I wiped the laptop 100% clean of everything even OS and now with the fresh windows 7 install it just has a single drive of 232GB, Should I partition this and keep the C: drive clean and use the other part to keep all my music, movies, downloads, etc.?

Thanks

Realistically that's more of an organizational choice (i.e. up to you), but in the end it's easier to be able to just wipe a partition and reinstall than it is to have to back up all of your crap before you can even think about doing anything.

If it were me, keeping the second partition is advantageous.

Re: new install of windows 7, should I partition my HD?

Just delete all the partitions on your hard drive using the install cd and then click the new button and make just 1 partition and windows will automatically make a small partition buffer so you don't max your hardrive and cause problems. You could make a 16gb partition for your operating system so it runs a little faster but realistically it's not a big deal and if you run out of room on the operating system partition you've got problems. I always do 1 partition on laptops, just did 1 on my notebook the otherday. An advantage to the multiple partitions would be that if you ever corrupted you operating system you could just reinstall over you OS partition and still keep all your movies and pics on the drive without transferring them. Since I have a desktop I could care less about this and transferring fills off a corrupt hard drive is not that hard to do.

Just make a 40gb os partition and another partition for movies with whats left over, you might be happy you did later.

Re: new install of windows 7, should I partition my HD?

I like having another partition to store stuff on and backup my userprofile, so if I ever format & reinstall Windows or put on a different OS, I don't lose everything.

Dual partitions ftw. That way porn typically only corrupts one and its easier to clean the mess

I've met turbotalon1g and from the looks he's gonna max the HD with porno so it looks like 2 partisions is the way to go when you corrupt your hardrive. Just giving you sh@t, thanks for the oil sender guage.
