Jim/TalonEvo has been tearing it up in his evo for quite some time, we've all been jealous of what he's done with such a stock car. Last week it was 457whp at DB and then he realized he had a massive boost leak. That fixed, who knows what it'd do, all on a FP Red. After tearing it up last night, a bad noise was heard. The stock bottom-end had given up the ghost
We pulled the rod ends off and sure enough, bearing spun 90° and uh, mushroomed and missing a bit. Cyl 2,3,&4 seemed dandy but the oil pan was filled with goldish flecks.
Time to build it bigger sorry buddy.

damn, nothing planned but im not mechanically enclined to do engine rebuilds like that. If I was to help...i'd probably be in the way. hopefully all goes well.
Re: If you're bored tonight, Jim could use a hand :(
I'm pretty sure it was an oiling issue though I don't know why. It had an oil change less than 2,000 miles ago, I run 15-50w mobil1.
My experience with spun bearings is usually lack of oil. I had no knock in the motor. They always say your car feels best right before it goes. I got a few good runs in last night before I heard the death rattle, at least I didn't loose my block, head or Turbo.
Trying to have it up and running it a couple weeks. Dropping off the block hopefully Monday and then however fast I can get a 2.4 crank, rods, pistons, bearings and gaskets. Probably should think about a new front case or at the very least a new oil pump while I'm at it.
Thanks everyone for the help today, it was much appreciated. Chris was there right away to help even though I didn't ask for any. Aaron also showed up and then went home and stopped back with some tools I will definitely make use of.
Oh, I also want to thank Andrew for the ride home after I parked the car early Saturday morning.

I'm not an Evo expert by any means, but 15w-40 sound like way to thick to be runnin through a newer motor. Most new engines have much tighter tolerance's and much smaller oil passages than older engines did, thicker oil actualy will damage you engine more than help. Like I said I dont know enough about X's, to be much help here, but from what I have seen this is a huge mistake area for a lot of performance guys. Thinking thicker = better lubrication, doesnt always work out right

Yeah, who knows if that was the cause but oiling plays a HUGE part in this obviosuly. For the record I have been running that oild for over 3 years and the motor has made over 400 whp for a year and a half. I have a good old 7 bolt 4g63 Evo IX, not a X.
It will be interesting to see the wear on other bearings once I have taken more apart.

It blows up just like a X. haha. Not so bad for you since you know how to fix it.
There's a company that makes an oil pan for the X that supposedly has improved baffling. After spending all that time figuring out my fuel starvation issues, I wasn't surprised to learn that oil starvation is also a problem for aggressive drivers.
Re: If you're bored tonight, Jim could use a hand :(
Thanks again to scheides and jason (Jaei Sun) help was much appreciated once again.
Block is stripped down and ready for machining. Just need the parts to come together now. I want to run this at the porkies shootout if possible this year.
Re: If you're bored tonight, Jim could use a hand :(
North burbs ftw!
I'm pumped because I just rode in this car the other day and I think Jim probably poored some of his glitter makeup in the motor just to have an excuse to build a 2.3, we were both talking about how we love them.
Come on, I mean the wife leaves for a couple days perfect time to spin a bearing and have to upgrade.
Let me know when wrench time is again and I will be there, this whole weekend has been packed and I wish I could of been there more.
If you are going to that Porky's Shootout, then I will find my way down there too.
Re: If you're bored tonight, Jim could use a hand :(
Man it was a freaking lot of work and it was pretty hot but once we got the engine out and on the engine stand it sure was fun tearing it down and checking out all the internals. First time for me going in that far was back when I had my 1G:
but that was my semi newb days and I foolishly left the stock 7-bolt in the car and just drove it with a few basic mods and pump gas :P Anyways, I learned a lot today, thanks for letting me tag along man! It's like doing a timing belt, head gasket, and clutch job all at once, gah.

Not to worry, I finished off that 7 bolt and did everything the right way!
