14 days until I am off to Basic Training!! Woohoo!

I can't fucking wait!

Due to everyone from pretty much every service saying that they wished they had joined the USAF, that is what I decided to do! I will be signing my contract for 4yrs enlisted/4yrs IRR.

My job is Aerospace Propulsion, so I will be removing/fixing/replacing jet engines. It shouldn't be too bad to do for a few years. I get my FAA mechanic license or whatever it is called, so I am going to try to get a part time job after I get out working on private jets. Should be a good summer income to go along with becoming a HS Physics teacher(which is my current plan).

I graduate from basic on new years eve. From there, I go to Sheppard AFB, which is in the middle of fucking nowhere.(Wichita Falls, TX) I have a feeling my 3.5months there will suck.

I am extremely excited for the experience, it should be a good one!

Congrats man. My little bro is down at Iowa State on a ROTC scholarship.

If I had been given the body to get through training, I would have done Coast Guard as a medic. Unfortunately...luck didn't go my way, haha.

Congrats man. I wish you the best.

As for the degree, I'm going out on a limb and guessing he's going to try and use the military college incentives towards a degree.

Good luck, the military is great experience for anyone. To do it over again, I would have completed two years of college first and went in as an officer, but I actually went in to get money for college, and that worked out good. Top Gun came out after I was already in or I would've held off and became a pilot. Damn.

Yeah, you need your Bachelors and the associated classes to get your teaching certificate.

I plan on taking full advantage of the Post 9/11 GI Bill when I get done. I am still amazed at how awesome the new GI Bill is. Pays fully for any state school, plus they give you basic housing allowance, which in the Twin Cities is 1500 a month. I am going to start towards a physics degree, and I would love to be a High School teacher, but I might end up staying in school and double majoring physics/microbiology and possibly try for med school.

Re: 14 days until I am off to Basic Training!! Woohoo!

My brother enlisted when he was 17 and was sent to basic the summer before his senior year of high school, he ended up getting mono two weeks in, was put in isolation and my dad went down to retrieve him. ((my dad is a retired 2nd Lt, Army (he had to retire at age 23, I think, honorable discharge), West Point grad)). Everyone in his original group is now over in Iraq and Afghanistan. He ended up getting the ROTC scholarship, so now he can't be deployed until he graduates college (he's got 5 years to get his mechanical engineering degree at Iowa State). I'm definitely glad for that, but also definitely glad the military is paying for his schooling, too. It's definitely an incentive to join if you can't afford school.
