I don't understand why people ask for a free carfax. If you're going to make a $10,000+ investment in a car, why wouldn't you drop $20 for a carfax?

What if I'm not spending $10,000? Why not make a simple post and see if somebody could help me out? The guy works as a mechanic at a dealership, so he can more than likely get me the carfax for free, so I think it's pointless to pay for it just so I can see it ahead of time. But if somebody could also get me a copy for free, I could make sure there isn't a poor history ahead of time. That is all.
