Turbo problems
Hey everyone, I took off my turbo tonight because somehow the threads got messed up on my turbo. That caused the bolt to get loose and the gasket is basically disintegrated now.
I really have no idea how this happened, yea the bolt got loose because it backed out (bad lock washer), but now that the turbo is off, the bolt actually will slide right through the hole in the turbo, but it still looks threaded inside... how does this happen?
Anyway now that it's off I was just going to retap the threads and use a new gasket, but noticed that the exhaust housing looks cracked. It looks like it's just on the surface, but who knows. Should I spend the money to ship it to FP and have them check it out while it's there? Any ideas on how much they take to look at a turbo even?

Re: Turbo problems
Buy a new turbo and stop messing with these used ones.

Re: Turbo problems
^Used turbos the problem?
How bad is the crack?
On my last turbo I had a crack that got worse but the turbo was fine didn't act different.
But mine wasn't in the location that yours is in.

Re: Turbo problems
If it doesnt leak exhaust Id leave it alone, unless you have money to toss at it.
I say drive it till it falls off and buy a NEW one. No more used ones.. haha

Re: Turbo problems
Take another look at the turbine wheel, is there something up with that?

Re: Turbo problems
^^ Not sure what you mean, but I took better pics from the inlet showing the wheel, also some from the side showing the crack on the wastegate hole and also of the turbine wheel.

I was talking about this. It might just be the angle.

Re: Turbo problems
Ah I see now. I just checked it and the little notch is part of the housing, like a small casting nub. You can see it in the other pics.

Re: Turbo problems
I bought a used FP3575 and it was fine, but I was stupid and didn't tighten the compressor cover bolts after polishing the cover. After a quick rebuild and new compressor wheel at FP, it's been good as new. I've had really good luck with their turbos, that's why I've never bothered with the cheap $650 Garretts.

Re: Turbo problems
lol, cheap. Good luck with this, Andrew, I am in agreement though on the idea of slapping it back on with the easiest/cheapest fix and save a little here or there for a nice new unit later on.

Re: Turbo problems
So how about the threads? How could the threads look like they're still fine but the bolt goes right through? Should I just get a slightly longer bolt and use a nut to hold it tight??

Very strange about the thread, but if the bolt goes right through the cheapest/easiest solution would be a longer bolt and a nut for the other side.

Re: Turbo problems
If the longer bolt doesnt work, HeliCoils work great!

Re: Turbo problems
X2 for Heli-Coil. Can retain your original bolt size that way. Then get some ARP turbo bolts, they are awesome.
